Hi,

I've got two youth players that we would like to switch to medium pips on backhand. Both play close to table and mainly push, block and flat hit with the backhand. Both have good forehands with which they usually flat hit.

Now I was thinking of getting them some 563 (or 563-1, though what's the difference?), but I am wondering what sponge thickness I should get. What would you advise?

563 1.5mm is very good for what you are describing. It's my current backhand rubber but I'm also testing 563 1.8mm Mystery (aka 563 Raw Rubber) and the latter is far faster and livelier, making pushing challenging at times. 563-1's pips are supposed to be wider spaced but I haven't seen or tried it yet. Another big difference between the standard 563 1.5mm from Zeropong and the 1.8mm Mystery is that the 1.5 version is much better at serve return, making hitting through spin child's play, whereas the 1.8mm Mystery behaves more like an inverted rubber.

can i know what the hardness suitable for 563? and thickness?
now i use 563 with 1.8 30 degree japan sponge..

play like inverted rubber but my opponent too easy play with me..

563 1.5mm from Zeropong ("New Special soft #35") is the most difficult for opponents as it delivers more near-dead balls that opponents misread and put into the net. It can create spin but nothing like inverted. Flat hits have that famous 563 late ball path drop.

563 1.8mm Mystery sponge is more like inverted but has far less pip effect than 1.5mm. Mystery sponge is bouncy which I find makes this 563 difficult to use in the short game, and hard to predict when blocking.

563 2.0mm from Zeropong ("New Special soft #35") can play like inverted though a different stroke is required since it doesn't lift the ball the same as inverted rubber. It is very low throw and quite fast. It can deliver near dead balls but you have to put some effort into it (unlike 1.5mm which does so naturally). Late ball path drop is even more pronounced than 1.5mm. I'm amazed at how much difference there is between 1.5mm and 2.0mm. 2.0mm weighs more (naturally), with a cut sheet of 1.5mm weighing around 24g and a cut sheet of 2.0mm weighing around 28g. (1.8mm Mystery weighs about the same as 2.0mm.)

All three are very good for serving as it's hard for your opponent to gauge how much spin is really on the ball. All three are able to hit through spin with ease though it takes a special "elbow forward" flattish stroke to do this well. I started with 1.5mm because that's what one of my coaches uses, but I'm now using 2.0mm which better suits my favorite roll/flick backhand stroke. The 1.8mm Mystery version was my (and my coaches) least favorite 563 due to its lack of control.

After trying dozens of LPs -- both OX and sponge -- over the last year and finding none really good for at attacking style, I've finally found a pip I can play with, and one that stands up to hard use without broken pips. At at $10 per sheet it's an easy rubber to afford.

I bought my 563 1.8mm Mystery from http://www.presports.com that happens to be in.. Malaysia. I see they also sell the Tack-speed version and also a 563 Mystery II version that I didn't notice before.

can i know what diffrence top sheet 563 mystery and 563 tack speed?

I ordered from Presports only because they had 563 "raw rubber", though upon receiving it I came to the conclusion that Raw Rubber = Mystery. Reading the package's poorly translated Chinese leads me to believe that the top sheet is the same; it's the sponge and special gluing method they use to attach it to the top sheet that differentiates the Mystery version from the Tack Speed version.
