After an initial attempt to switch to Half Long, my team mates made me switch back to Friction Special until the end of the season, however I'm still quite clear that my future is with the medium pips. Now the question... anyone know any examples of pros who use med pips to block and attack?? I'd really like to analyse some video clips

Sorry I don't know of any clips with medium pips, but it made me think that there actually is NO clear definition of which pips are classed as medium pips... The ITTF only lists pips-out and long...

Julian,

I don't know what characteristics you seek in a medium length pip, but Pimple Mini is a very interesting pip. It's an ultra skinny short pip that is not terriable for hitting, not very sensitive to in-coming spin, yet can create a heap of it's own spin when you hit the ball at a strong angle (ie serving, chopping, or clever push).

Greggy used to be a medium pip hitter, and from memory tried 4-5 different pips before settling on 563-1. He'll tell you what he thought of each of them, though your game style may be different.

I've been thinking about pimple mini but I really like half long. I can even top spin with it! My coach knows it inside out too which is a big plus. I don't want to disappear down the rubber testing rabbit hole!!! The problem foir me with half long is it plays like a short pip, so I've some adapting to do

I've seen Jiang Huajun reported as using medium. also seen reports of Ai Fukuhara using medium(along with spectol and even long pips) but they both just look like short pips players to me.

Miao Miao uses 563 on the bh. Seems to chop the bh a little( 1-2 a game?)

Tawny Bahn(usa national class) uses 563 bh.

Song Ah Sim reportedly uses 'medium'(juic masterspin) on the fh and that definitely looks like short pips play to me.

Here is a vid of 2 of those players against each other

Absolutely true. In my own thinking the two often referenced 'mediums' are conpletely different. P2 is(to me at least) a type of long and 563 is a type of short.
