P2 is more a long pip, it's normal long pip length but a fatter pip. It gets true reversal unlike a medium pip but very easy to use unlike most thin long pips. It's nothing like say 563. P2 overall is a very good rubber

I am interested in trying a medium pip for chopping. I use a Butterfly Defence Alpha blade and am just curious as to what the medium pip equivalent of Curl P1r is? Thanks! |

I discovered that Friendship 563 with firm (not soft) Friendship orange sponge of 1.5-1.8 mm produced extremely heavy chop against loops. I wouldn't have expected that but that spin was some of the heaviest I've found. Of course this is my results using my stroke which is a full chop starting from head level down and under and through the ball at high speed with wrist added. But in that situation the 563 produces a really strong ball. TSP P-2 is a medium pip in structure but conventional wisdom is that P-2 is suited to attacking near the table more than chopping from distance. |

Li Qian (once #22 in the world) plays defense with 563 as well but I do not know what sponge she used. There are quite a few vids of her on youtube. |

I've watched her vids sooo many times...Li Qian is definitely a cutie with her own personal style and form. I think she used 802 short pips on Matsushita Pro. She produces a lot of high arcing chops with that set up... a little too high for my taste. I have tried 563 OX, reminds me of 755 OX but shorter. Too difficult for me to chop with on the backhand. |

Another way to chop away from the table, a BH chop block. I used to do this several years ago. I used a fat med LP 1.0. This technique has the paddle face tip down and makes solid contact, the ball does not float but goes in straight low line over the net. The ball is usually taken below the table. This technique gives a natural variation of spin depending how solid your contact was on the ball. The spin is very difficult to read. Spinny bullet loops can chop block easily. In my opinion this technique is easier than the more conventional method of chopping and generates lots of spin. I was able to do this technique like a robot so I very seldom missed or got the ball up high. I just recently tried this with 2.0 and after a few bucket of robot balls was able to get the consistency I had with 1.0. The rubber I have now is friendship 563-1 2.0. The advantage of this rubber over LP is control, pushing normal backspin is like inverted, hitting is easier to control than LP. This works very well with an inverted 4H especially if you can counterloop on both sides and flip sometimes which I used to do. Example, Chop block, flip, counterloop, flip, chop block, causes lots of problems. You will have to chop conventionally on the 4H side as I never learned to chop block on this side because it is much more difficult. |

I watched a guy play with TSP PR2 the other night. He was very savvy...very effective. He chopped and got decent back spin. Decent deception. Looked like a fun pip to play with............. |

I've also been on a mission to chop with med pips. I've tried a few. I ordered 563 with 1.5 Air 30 deg sponge from colestt.com and am very happy with it. I'm chopping with a Innerforce AL. The mystery sponges, even 1.2 are too fast. I think 563 is a very effective pip for chopping if you can find a slow/soft enough sponge for them. The problem is you can't load up spin like you can with an SP and you can't rely just on reversal. Floaters become your best friend, and you're better off chopping dead balls than trying to spin the hell out of it, b/c generally the underspin you're able to put won't be that much, compared to other rubbers. Yet, any stray balls that are put in front of you can be put away easily.
