When were med. pips first classified and sold as such? Can we pinpoint the first Medium Pips?

I had what amounted to essentially a 30 year lay-off from the game (with a few notible exceptions) and there were a lot of things that changed during that time, obviously, but I don't remember hearing when medium pips first came on the market or at least were advertised as such.

Any help???

I have no idea... the first medium pip I remember being mentioned is the 563

Do you remember when? I was at the factory in Tian Jin in 2001 and I don't remember it being in the product line then.

I was recently told by a longtime 563 user that it's been on the market for at least 30 years. Edit: Oops.. turns out he's been using pips on his BH for 30yrs; not sure if it was 563 all that time or not.

Yes that's what I thought... i though it had been around for decades!

Visiting the factory was a wonderful experience, the folks there treated me, as the others I had met before and since, as an honored guest. I was able to see the polymer mixed put onto the molds and process and final prep.

I had the opportunity to meet the engineer that is credited with the development of the 729 rubber, the number is to commemorate the day the project to make a table tennis rubber for world class players was achieved.

There was a lot of hand work that went into the process. I was asked not to take any pictures or divulge any "secrets." I was shown a new rubber that when it was stuck to itself would rip before it the suface adhesion gave way.

Got some of the real Wang Nan rubber;)

Have shirts and shorts from the factory shop and had a chance to play in the Friendship table tennis dojo.

It was a great experience.

It was memorable on a lot of levels. They stayed on past the close of business and as I said, I was made to feel an honored guest.

I hope to be able to remember that experience forever.

If you ever make plans to go, do try to schedule everything ahead of time. I am not sure that they acutally do factory tours, per se.

I still have the security pass that I was issued. I asked to keep it and they said it was my ticket for re-entry anytime. How cool is that. They may have just figured never to see me again, but it still makes me feel great that they said it.

I bought some stuff, they gave me stuff. I love stuff.

The oldest mid-long pips bat I have in my collection seems to be from the 70's :



One of the bats is a mid-pips, the other rather a long-pips : its pips are longer than for the first one, but shorter than for modern long-pips rubbers, I think they might be around 1.5 mm long.

No one mentioned Butterfly Magnitude. I think Insook Bushan, US women's Champion,
used it for chopping in the 80's.

I was just going to mention that, lol! I think that was BTY's first and only medium pip rubber!

tOD that factory tour sounds great! As you say, a long time fond memory. Got any pics? If nothing else snap a pic of the security pass (put sample or something on the pic with photoshop if your concerned at all) just for a look. How big was the place? How many workers?

As for mid pips, I also have no idea. C7 was my first indoctrination to them only in 2008. Have tried a few others before going to LP again. Now going to try Meteor 845 Ox.
Some have said MP does what SP or LP do, just not as well as either. Personally, my experience is that mix of both worlds injects a synergy into MP use that gives something neither SP or LP can on their own. Its a different animal, and deserves respect in its own right...which its now been given on the forum with its own section here!
