Has anybody tried the Friendship 563 and the 563-1?

I spoke to US Olympian Wei Wang and she mentioned the 563-1 when I said that I played with short pips on both sides.

Any comments?

Wei knows better than I would, but I found 563 hard to do anything with as it wasn't very spinny. I knew a penholder who could serve me off the table with it. I think it's pretty specialized, while I think 799 is more usable by most people and stil a little bit tricky.

That reminds me of the the BTY Rein that I tried 8 years ago on my BH. I could not do much with it due to its lack of spin but it could create great knuckle balls (which unfortunately I could not master executing properly). I gave up on it soon enough.

I tried Rein once and it had wider pips and seemed spinnier than Impartial, are you thinking of Resilon (which has the smallest pips of the three)?
Either way, 563 is the dead ball rubber, I couldn't generate spin at all, while I can generate some spin with regular 802 or 799.

It was probably Resilon.

Speaking of 802, I have switched to plain 802 on my BH from 802-40 to compare their performance.

Since you are such a believer in the 802-1, I might even try that. You said that despite the published description it was spinnier than the 802, right?

Is a spinnier 802 an advantage? (I know the kind of grip, SH or PH, may be a factor to consider.)

For me it is, especially as I am using thinner sponge and the rubber unglued and on my forehand. If it was on your backhand and you don't serve with it, it might not be. See what you think.

I tired 563 and found that to hit with it I would need to change my technique too much, but when I did manage to do it, the shot was very effective and sunk like crazy. A lot of very good women players in China use it on the BH side, but I think they start that way from a young age.

You know, Baal's post just made me want to try 563 for kicks. I happen to like RITC 799 1.5mm out of the package, which I find odd as I have not much experience with SP during that time I briefly played with it.

I'd also had someone tell me that if you like the sinking effect of 799, you'll like 563 better. But it's not for everyone, as it seems to be harder to play with block/hit usage.

Locally, 563 is with the usual orange sponge, and 563-1 has the HRS sponge. I might try the 563-1 first, after I decide if I'm going to play with 802 or 799.

I am going to try the 563 for my BH but am undecided on the sponge to use.

I have Dr. Zheng's Yellow sponge 2.0 mm and 35 degrees Reactor sponge 2.2 mm.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Softer sponge makes it easier to hit.

Softer sponge should enable more spin but does a softer sponge (as against a harder one) lessen the knuckle ball effect of the 563?

Perhaps someone can explain too on how the 563's medium pips produce a dead ball.

I finally tried out the 563 (on 2.0 mm sponge) last night and it gave my opponent headaches.

The 563 kills the spin and the resulting "dead balls" usually just drop off opponent's rackets.

But it was a big struggle for me because one's technique really has to change in order to use the 563 effectively. It seems that I have trained myself too much in the use of the regular short pips, but nevertheless it was a great learning experience.

The 563 on my BH was terrible but adjustment was better on my FH.

By the way, another player observed that the ball may come in fast but slows down quickly due to its lack of spin.

Next on my test list is the 563-1 with 1.8 mm soft sponge.

amateur,

One thing I have noticed, though: Play for a couple of hours with something like 563 and then come back to your regular SP and you will play better. The technique it forces you into is actually good SP technique. If, like me, your are a convert from inverted (several years ago in my case), it is STILL really good to periodically use something like 563 to readjust your muscle memories away from inverted. In my case, I started playing when I was a little kid and played inverted on my BH until my early 40s.

You reckon Dr. Evil could do the same thing to improve technique?

You may have a valid point here. After a tough time struggling with 563 the other day, I went back to using 802 on my BH and had a surprisingly great time punching and blocking (although I normally use the grippy 802-40 on BH). I was quite surprised how I quickly adjusted to the less spinny 802 considering that I had difficulties using it (for the first time) 3 months ago and thus had switched to the 802-40.

I have been using inverted since childhood and only converted to all SP about 4 months ago (after a hiatus of 5 years :( ).

Everybody plays with inverted at my club (except for one other player) and SP play seemed more exciting.
