I played a tournament yesterday and had one of the state players coach me after a few games

he seems to be of the opinion that Me using P1-R is a bad idea - it's a chopping rubber and i am by no means a chopper (his words were you should NEVER be a chopper - you have the makings of an extremely good forehand attack. your game style suits blocking on the backhand)

in saying that, he advised that i should look towards the possibility of a medium-long pip for blocking and counter-attacking.

what do you guys think of his advice, and is there anything you would reccomend?

(by the way silver, this was Paul Jones giving me the advice)

Hey, how did you go at the Wynnum tourny?

Why not just a less spinny short pip?
Something like Spectol 21?

i'm keen on reversal and dropshotting with the LP, it's a really handy part of my game...

i did good. i lost in the samis of the C grade to a guy called martin (new tournament player) 11-8 in the 5th - had HUGE audience for it. cheers and everything. apart from playing me, he only dropped one set in the whole of C grade.

and drew him in 2nd round of the B grade and lost to him again. :( bit unfortunate - he said at the end he was very lucky, he got more than a few nets and edges in every game. :( not much you can do.

some very cool matches though.

If you wanna try some medium-long pip, decent chinese ones that are good imo are 729 563-1 or double happiness C7 in 0.8-1.3mm. Gambler peacekeeper is good I read, affordable sells them but in ox I think and you need to glue sponge seperate.

those that play like a short pip that I've tried i.e. good for attack sp-ish strokes, NO chop block, some disturbing effect diamant, halflong, I'd even put Pluto in this category(i'd give gambler a miss I didn't like that at all). These are blocking/hitting pips
those that play like lp i.e. chop block, can manipulate spin some leggy (leggy attack version is wickedly fast and with a great chop block has thin flexy pips that you can really work the ball with) , tsp p3 (harder pips than leggy, great in OX), I'd also put tsp pH here as it is a long pip but hard pips and for hitting. These will block, chop block, hit and manipulate spin some.
The first I'd try would be the leggy for the kind of game you are describing. 1mm sponge attack version if you can get it, if not the defence version will do - still fast. Carl Prean's pip for years. You've got a very aggressive hitting/blocking pip with the advantage of the chop block when you need it

Hi Julian,

Would you include 755-2 in this cathegory? Would you recommend it to Superhappy? On the other hand, Bomb Talent (with a thread of its own in this cathegory) cannot be neglected.

SuperHappy,

What kind of style do you play at the table. Can you return serve on your BH if you had an inverted rubber on your BH?
Can you twiddle?
When blocking, do you want to be able to take the ball at the bounce or a foot away from the table?
Is control and placement important to you or do you just want to block and hit?

Have you thought of using an anti?

From what I've heard, the Peacekeeper is much better OX than with sponge. It does block very well in OX, not much reversal, but it gives a dead ball back. You won't hit through anybody with it, though.

never tried 755-2! I tried 755 faster when I first switched to pips and didn't like it. Went from that to C8, which was better and maybe a better recommendation. BTW I am REALLY going to miss Insider. Just got back from a session with Long Li and I was blocking almost everything he send me, so much control... I'm sure with whatever I end up with I'll have more options but just having so much control from a rubber I'm going to suffer working on yet another pip
