well had a hit with 1.3 red Pluto on my bh yesterday - really was just a hit in the middle of a training session. It was quite a non event, but in a good way. Didn't need to adjust much to play with it, blocks went on, attacks attacked, rolls rolled. Very good control. Not very difficult for my opponent, but then it is an sp not an lp, no 'wow factor (hey it does 'THIS')', but a very controllable, very good block/rolling pip as Andrew said it was. Only thing I couldn't get right was the open blade hit against backspin, but that was me, not the pip. If I go the sp route when/if Insider gets canned, this will be it.

Yeah, I'm planning to try Pluto again as my "LP substitute" for helping players in my club prepare to play against long pips, as we have no long pippers currently in the club.

While I know it is not as tricky as most long pips, it is easy for me to control, which helps teach other players patience and it does give a very flat ball and it easy for me to chop block or continue sidespin.

Also, as Martinspin's tests showed, there was some reversal against heavy spin, more than some long pips.

Also I think playing with it helps my rolling technique as that is really the best shot to use with this pip until the ball gets high enough to hit flat.

I think something like Daimant gives more of an lp effect, certainly it gives people more trouble. Most people I play against much prefer the lp to daimant. Soft hits with diamant really go down!

Just had a look at that vid and two things spring to mind:
1. martinspin, man, bend your knees! My back was aching in sympathy after 5 mins of watching you chopping!
2. Not sure how useful chopping is to get people used to pips, they seem to be much more difficult to manage for newbies in a blocking game, and I'm really not sure how disturbing pluto is in that type of game. The guy I hit with had no trouble at all, but he plays against lps alot. You've certainly only got a very mild chop block

well, had a further hit with pluto tonight and it does everything I could expect a sp to do, and is very easily controlled BUT I realise that sp on the bh is a bad idea for me as the speed of the game goes to fast! I hadn't realised how when the balls start coming too fast for me to handle, I pop in the lp and take control of the rally again - yup lp it is for me with tsp p3 as the fave if Insider goes the way of everything else the ittf doesn't like

That's why I switched back to long pips. Putting the short pips on my backhand, I wanted to play a more offense-oriented game. But after a couple of months I was still missing a lot of shots because the game moved too fast for me; I need to be able to change the pace, slow it down with the backhand, speed it up with the forehand. I just never got comfortable playing a fast game like that.

Me 3. I was happy with 2 wing fast attack at 20 but at 48 I want the lp slowdown effect. I've been working on twiddling to use the short pips on the bh side and I discovered I even need to watch that. Twiddled, hit nice crosscourt bh drive with the 802-40 watched our best penholder punch block it down the line for a clean winner. Gonna have to be more tactically subtle!

It's fun to play that way, with the fast attacking, but if you don't have the control for the speed, it just won't work. That's o.k., I like the tactical game the best anyway. And hitting with the long pips can get a lot of points from your opponent mis-reading the amount of pace and spin on the ball.

Well I cut my new sheet of Pluto tonight and stuck it on the R1 and had a hit against the training board. I must say it requires either a pretty disciplined BH stroke at the right angle or an ease off the power to a roll, for it to land on the table. I found it just to easy to send it hurtling over then end 2 feet above the table. I'm rarely this far out with LP. This will take some time to figure out if there's anything there for me.

it is not an lp substitute but a pur sp. I thought it was easy to control, but the game just got too fast for me to handle with sp both sides!

I'm gonna try it on an endless, as a chopping pip. Its got good reversal, very similar to a kinda super 802. I tried it with a Xiom fuga, which was too fast, but had good effect. So I'm gonna try a short pip because it gives me the advantage of mixing floats in with my chops.

Tell us how it goes -- I found it quite fast even in it's 1.3mm variant.
