Anyone know about the 874 pips. A teammate got them from a website without asking my opinion. They have a 2.2 sponge and are black. He had been using 802-40 on his backhand but wants something slower. I suggested Pluto, but I'm wondering how 874 would work.

It has smallish, medium long pimples compared to 651. Here's the description, as fast as 651 but spinnier (I kind of doubt that):
DHS 874 PIP RUBBER

Spin: 11
Speed: 12
Thickness: M
Hardness: soft
Pips-out special rubber

Special formula in design
Special technology in manufacturing
Special effect - High speed, Spin and Sink

I breifly had a hit with my friend's 874, his was labeled pf4-874 and was on a custom 1.0mm hard sponge so thats probably going to skew the results. I think DHS have it listed as special rather than short pips but I'm not sure what that means.

From memory, it was the lowest throw rubber I've tried, which made it excellent for blocking. It scrubbed spin off the ball when hitting and blocking, but it didnt bend the ball like 563 can, so I guess it didnt have any reversal. The basesheet was thin like the other DHS pips. I remember it as being well behaved over the table and the topsheet itself was spinny. I couldnt gauge the speed properly because I was hitting right through the sponge on faster shots.

I'd be interested to know how this plays on a softer sponge, if it blocks as well as I remember it might be worth buying a sheet.

I have tried it out a while ago in 2.0 mm yellow sponge (probably the same as DHS is using for 651 and 652?). It is more of a medium pip, topsheet pretty insensitive to incoming spin, but on a soft thick sponge capable of some spin. It felt very springy, not so say jumpy... Very little dwell-time. Far less control than either 652 or 651. Fast and tricky; I didn't like it at all, because I like to have lots of control. I wouldn't try it if I wanted something less fast than 802-40; Friendship 799 (2.0 mm) resembles 874 a bit (soft surface, longer pips, insensitive to spin) and probably would be a better choice. Meteor 71-2 in 2.0 mm would be quite a bit slower, but for the rest it is in a lot of respects similar to 799.

Thanks, sounds like Pluto would be a better choice for him.
