In the long pimple forum there was a discussion

about the different pip orientation (vertical or horizontal) of the different pimple sheets. We found out that short pips had more vertical orientation and long pips more horizontal orientation (with exception of Globe 979 and 755 faster) So it seems like vertical pip orientation is more for attacking style.

Over the last weeks i had a chance to try some medium pimple rubbers. Medium pips being in between short and long pips I was wondering about their orientation and if you can categorize them in more defensive or attacking pips according to their pip orientation.

Horizontal orientation: kokutaku 110, Neubauer Diamant, FS 563, ......................

Vertical orientation: DHS C7, Armstrong attack 3, TSP L-catcher, meteor 9012,..............................


Anyone have an idea?

I've often wondered about that too, and I have not managed to convince myself why the orientation should make a significant difference.

As far as vertical orientation being for more offensive pips, I'm not too sure on that. I think it has more to do with a combination of many other factors including sponge. Millitall for example has vertically arranged pips but is one of the highest control medium pips I've used...

Perhaps a vertical arrangement of pips has more to do with spin generating abilities rather than speed or offensive vs defensive. Off the top of my head some vertically arranged pips: globe 979, juic leggy defense, tsp millitall, and nittaku pimplemini. These are all what I would consider to be very spinny medium/long pips focusing less on spin reversal and more on spin variation.

Actually short pips vary in orientation. Most Chinese short pips (Friendship 802/802-1/802-40/799, DHS 651 and 652, Globe 889-2, Winning NP-8, Milky Way Pluto, plus Yasaka Omote, Joola Tango Ultra, Juic Patisuma and TSP Super Spin Pips which are seem to use a Chinese design topsheet) are horizontally oriented.

Most Japanese short pips (like TSP Spectol/Tyranno, Stiga Clippa/Radical/Royal, Juic Offense, Nittkua Hammond FA, Yasaka T-Original and PB-1, Butterfly Raystorm and Globe 889) are vertically oriented.

I used to think the vertically oriented pips had a higher throw angle, so they were better for attacking and the horizontally oriented had a lower throw angle so were better for blocking, but the sponge, hardness of the topsheet and the design of the pips also seems to play a role.
