Lots of great extra weight data here, but I'm not sure if the person who's maintaining the list is still doing it, as it's not been updated for while.

If anyone else has some spare time and will help keep this list updated, I'd love to hear from you. ;)

Brand: Huarite/HRT
Model: Red Crystal Carbon
Handle: FL
Weight: 84.35g

This wasn't so cheap. But they had these $2 off coupons and I needed to use it, and I've always been curious about these blades. There's three of them - a red, a blue and a black, and the photos always showed there was some weird texture on the blade. Ended up costing $11.45 including shipping. Yeah, it's one of those evil carbon blades, first one I've ever bought (back when I played last, you could NEVER find one so cheap). And the carbon is very, very thin - it's supposed to be Crystal Carbon, and if it's a copy of Stiga's, then it's just powdered carbon (as far as I can make out - lots of translation going on here..). I can't remember why I chose the red over the blue and the black, it probably had something to do with weight and blade thickness, but it might've been the price. Or maybe it just looked the most garish.

Anyhow.. why does the blade look so weird? The blade surface is covered with SILVER GLITTER. No idea why, and no idea whether I should try sealing the blade or not. The face ply is very thin (about 0.3-0.4mm) and dyed red.

Palio Defense 2008. 83.64g before sealing.

My first defensive blade (a by-product of that 50% off sale a couple weeks back!). At $30, I don't think I'd have paid full price for this blade, at $15, it was a "why not?". I'll have to figure out what to put on it.. maybe my favorite Emperor Dragon on one side for now and Dawei 388D-1 on the other side (I happen to have several sheets of this lying around). Later I'll get some sort of thin sponge inverted (maybe Batwings).

Anyone know what the wood on the face is?

Two copycat blades here.

(1) Huarite (HRT) 2091 "Clipper".
Weight: 88.57g.
Thickness: 6.85mm.

(2) Fake "Butterfly Primorac".
Weight: 89.56g
Thickness: 6.07mm.

Both of these are heavier than I like, I'm used the 80g Yinhe N11. Everyone says the Clipper is good for looping, I want to see what this is about. HRT copied the Stiga item to the extent of the red-dyed plies and layer in the handles, and printing the words "Clipper Wood" on the face. The blade has a slight trace of what looks like varnish on the blade face above the handle (you can see where the varnish ends). I applied my usual very thin layer of polyurethane varnish to it anyhow. Build quality on these blades is quite good, but not up to Yinhe standards. The HRT's handle looked like it was shaped by eye rather than turned using a pattern (looking at the butt end, it's not quite symmetrical).

The old clipper might be ok for looping at ~6mm, but an almost 7mm 7ply is entering into composite territory and more suitable for block/counter.

Seems that prediction these blades tend to be thicker than advertised bore out.

The 2091 "Clipper" is advertised as "6.8mm +/- 0.2mm", "88g +/- 5g":

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-shi ... 60085.html

so 6.85mm and 88.6g is well within advertised specs. I suppose it remains to be seen if it's as fast as your "thickness cubed" formula would predict - I expect it'll be fast but not nearly that fast. Quite a few people here say it's great for looping.

A Chinese Penhold blade this time. 729 Super-1. I bought it at one of Eacheng's auctions on ebay - the blade and two sheets of 729 XL for $12.66, quite a good deal.

Weight: 72.53g
Thickness: 6.10mm

Five ply, thick center ply.

Thickness varies between 6.01 and 6.15mm (thinner towards the tip). Note the funny markings on the front. CON? LOO? ALL and ATT I figured out immediately, they're used on shakehands blades, CON must be Control and LOO must mean Loop. Note that LOO+ is to the left of LOO. Why do they use this scale for penhold blades, and Def - All - Off for shakehands blades? The line on the blade is 17mm from the handle, I might use it as a guide when installing the rubber sheet.

I have (two examples of) this blade in Shakehands configuration, too - it's actually a very different blade. Thinner 7 ply construction (5.47mm thick, 90+ grams). The handle is way different (too narrow for me, must be a youth blade). The top of the handle extends 5mm higher onto the blade face than on the penhold blade. I don't know how true this is in general for chinese penhold versions of other blades, but if it is common then simply sawing off the end of a shakehands blade to make a penhold blade might not be optimum.

I meant the other Korbel blade that's listed at 5.6 or so and ended up 6.1mm.

Ah.. the Primorac. I think they meant the ORIGINAL Primorac was supposed to be 5.5mm:

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-shi ... 95820.html

Quote:
Butterfly Company Number: 30551 (Primorac) horizontal position
Thickness: 5.5mm (the actual subject)
Ball sense: Soft

Price went up to $18! (Was on sale for $9 a couple days ago.)

Played with the HRT 2091 (Clipper). Seems OK, feels nice for looping. It's just that it's too heavy. I can't get the racket speed I can get with the N-11.

De-rubbered my W6, took some thickness measurements. Average thickness 5.85mm. That would make it thicker than the Palio A08, which would be the thinnest cheap Chinese blade I've encountered so far.

Frankly, I can't see any difference in build quality between the W6 and the N11. The N11 just uses cheaper wood and is thicker, but both have the same great finish.

Two more blades.

1) Reactor DJ200A. Cheapest blade out there (bar maybe one from 999). I have four, plus two penhold. Normal price is about $8 a blade, I got these for $3.75 each during a 50% sale. This one (the heaviest) weighed 85.82g, the others are all lighter (80-82 grams). Blade thickness 6.06mm.

ImageImage

2) Fake Butterfly Korbel blade. This one actually weighs less and is slightly thinner than the Fake Primorac, only 82g so I might actually like it. Weight: 83.19g, thickness: 6.04mm.

ImageImage

Before I had this blade in hand I was wondering if it would end up being identical (other than the handle pieces) to the Fake Primorac - after all, the cheapest way to make two different things is to make them both the same and use one common assembly line. They ARE different - the Primorac weighs another 6 grams and is a few hundredths of a mm thicker, but this is within the range of variation for a single blade type. Here's the handle end view for the Fake Primorac, compare.
