What would be best matched with thick balsa blades in matters of inverted rubbers. I have a chance to try JOOLA R-1, and would like to match that with rubbers. I may have idea that thinner rubbers are better for some reason, but please, let me know what is your thought on it ? For reference I personally like better tacky rubbers :)

Thanks, Mel ...

If you're mainly hitting/blocking, for which this blade is most suitable, then a thin Tensor type rubber works really well. If you want to use it for looping, you'll be looking for a rubber that counteracts some of the Balsa properties...thicker Chinese rubber for bruish looping work well for this.

So, maybe Palio Thor's can work ? What about Macro Era or something similar ? Can softer rubbers work on it ? Thanks Haggisv

I haven't used Thors, but I do have an R1. I see no reason why Thors wouldn't work on this blade. Macro Era is not a tacky rubber as you said you liked, but it should also work fine on it. I haven't used my R1 in a while, but I had Gambler Outlaw on mine and it was a very nice combination. It produced good speed and feel. It wasn't tacky either and would probably have a harder feel than Macro Era, but not as hard as Thors.

I think soft works better than hard for hitting/blocking. Thor's is quite hard and only comes in MAX, so it would be OK for looping but you would not get the most benefit out of this blade. So as I mentioned, a lot depends on your style and what you want to do with it...

I have hit with an R-1, it is an extremely powerful blade. To some extent the blade will overpower the characteristics of whatever inverted rubber you put on it. Nothing will be slow. The one I used had 2.2mm Globe999 nat and 1.5mm mark V. It was a smile inducing rocket-launcher. I liked it, but it would take some taming in a match situation and is an all-out offensive weapon.

While it does have power, I found the R1 also has gears. Dwell time is not high as its quite stiff, but not impossible to loop with and not impossible to slow a shot down with...especially off the pips on the BH. I was actually playing with R1 and Gergely at the time and trying to decide which I liked better. The Gergely won out, mainly due to its greater maneuvring ability over the R1. I found the bulkiness of the R1 to be the main problem with it.

I hope I am not going to have a problem you had with handling a R1 ... I mean about moving it ....

It is a thick blade but it is not heavy and the head is not oversized. I agree with reb that it did have a reasonable or even good dwell to it. It was great for dropping off the table and going loop to loop. I struggled to land any back hand chops, which are part of my game. Thing is, i only hit with it for maybe a half hour which is not a lot of time to adjust. It certainly had bags more feel than, say, a t4. I was only using it out of curiosity, the owner was at the practice session, and the act was not for sale. Reb has obviously used the model far more than i have.

Balsa is quite unique...as it's slow on passive strokes but very fast on active strokes. Even though this blade is very fast, it runs out of puff away from the table...

That's very different to my impression - I was playing from way off the table and it still had bags of power; mind you, I do hit pretty hard anyway ....
