Got this blade, really nice, looked great, plays great. First time I pulled a rubber off, about half of the damn top layer of wood came with it. Big splinter chunks and a very fine layer of splinters over 1/2 the face of blade. :@

Anyone else ever have this happen? Is this a TSP thing? Is it the wood characteristics? Do they ever refund a defective product? I have 6 other blades and nothing like this has ever come close to happening. I got a Joo and Defense 2, which I've changed the rubber at least 20x per side and never once had a splinter come up. :n:

Defective? Nope. Just delicate. There are many blades like this. I have a Galaxy blade that has a splinter or two and lots of big chunks coming off the edges. Limba and Ayous can be very delicate. It all depends on the individual blade.

You should have sealed it. It costs AUD$4 for a 100ml tin of clear White Knight Splashes Acrylic Enamel from the hardware shop and $1 for a bunch of dishwashing sponges from the supermarket, which you then can cut long-ways into thirds and use to apply the lacquer thinly and evenly to the blade. Try it on a practice blade first.

My first real blade a Tibhar Smash was really torn up the first time I pulled rubbers off. They were a solid 8 years on the blade though so I should have suspected that it would happen.

It's rated by TSP to be OFF, speed 8.5, control 9. I'd say that's fairly accurate. It's probably the best feeling playing blade I've ever tried (out of about 10 blades). Low vibration, solid feeling. Medium hardness, perhaps a bit soft, medium stiffness. The handle is a bit small, like most TSP handles, but I'm 6'3" and I can live with it.

It's noticably wider at the bottom; precut rubbers will be a little small, no big deal though.

I use it with LP OX on the BH. Great control, great attacking capabilities. All strokes work well with this blade. On the FH I've tried Geospin Tacky, 729 Faster, and Tenergy 05. Flat hitting and looping were a breeze.

For about $50, this blade is highly recommended! Just make sure you seal it.

To add to josephs review, here's the TSP website for the TSP Kotony blade.

  • 5-ply
  • Medium-speed
  • Typical weight 85g, +/-5g
  • 159mm x 153mm head size, Length x Width
  • 6mm thickness
  • 100mm x 26mm handle size FL, Length x Thickness
  • Offensive-type; Stable-feeling, excellent control

Probably a different outer ply... As a few people have already mentioned, it's not quality issue, it just depend on what wood is used on the outer layer...

I got splinters on pretty much any blade I used which I did not seal. Hinoki, koto, and limba for the majority. It have to do with the type of glue used; whether the glue has a strong or weak bond, I suppose.
