This is a really good thread!

I wonder if we should look for some pictures of the different types of woods as well, and add those in?

That's a nice idea, in principle, but the problem is that if you, say, do a search for images of balsa wood, you just get pictures of boards, and I'm not convinced that will ultimately help anyone either recognize or appreciate a particular type of wood in a table tennis blade. Also, the pictures might take up a lot of room in the thread and make it less readable. But I can be convinced I'm wrong.

I thought Silver did a blade-based picture thread regarding this? I can't recall the location, will put it up when I find it somewhere in the forum...

I found another hardness scale for wood called the Janka scale.

http://www.sizes.com/units/janka.htm

Some notable woods in kN:

cedar, port orford (hinoki): 3.2
obeche (ayous): 1.9
limba: 2.2
redcedar, western: 1.6

I'm sure there are other variables like grain orientation and density but it is a nice baseline. I thought limba was softer than ayous.

Hi new member here, nice to meet you all :)
I've been playing tt since 2003, and now I'm thinking of making a handmade wooden blade using woods that's available in my country.
I have few questions about woods for blade and I hope anyone here will answer :

1. How to determine wether this wood is good for outer ply, mid ply or for core for tt blades? I've been thinking of using blackwood (janka 1720) or merbau woods (janka 1925) for outer ply because their pattern is beautiful. As you can see, their janka ratings are pretty high. Will that makes the blades hard to use for spin or chopping? Or will that makes the blade to fast to control?

2. From browsing on webs, I conclude that woods used for blade's core are soft woods. If I want to make a 5-ply OFF wooden blade, it is better to use the hardest ply on mid ply or on outer ply?

3. What's the difference between a single ply, a 3-ply, a 5-ply or a 7-ply wooden blade? What's more suitable for OFF blade?

Thank you beforehand and please do forgive my crappy English :?:

Can something be said on Awan? JOOLA uses it in some of their blades.

I added awan to the list, but there's scant information I can find on it, so if anyone has anything to say about it's properties, please chime in.

I knew awan sounded familiar... it's used in a new TSP blade called Phoenix, which I've just listed in the OOAK shop
http://tabletennisshop.com.au/index.php ... cts_id=953

By TSP's description it sounds like it's hard and rigid material...

The combination of kiri and awan is also used in the Donic burn series:
1+5ply: Mahagoni
2+4ply: Awan
Centre ply: Kiri

The Wood Explorer Database lists a number of species that are colloquially known as "awan". Without knowing the exact species, it's impossible to say anything much about its properties.

i wonder about the koto wood. are there 2 kinds of koto? one light color and the other is dark grey? look at Butterfly's Timo boll spirit,Kong linghui & Viscaria(all light color) vs Dhs Hurricane king 655(dark grey). they all have koto outer ply!

so what is the story here?

Maybe it's dyed a different color?

I know that that's the case with koto from Ross.

For some reason, koto seems to commonly dyed. I've seen it in a number of different colors. Maybe it just takes dye more easily than most woods.

I have a few questions:

Which ply is most responsible for dwell time?
Which woods offer good dwell time?
