Hey guys, thanks. I'm pretty happy with how it's turning out. It was my first time working with quilted maple, and I found out first hand how troublesome it is to shape without tearout. The handle has a few dings, but I found some tips online, so the next time should go better.

Thomas - I'm happy to hear that the blades are working out. I'm anxious to see you use them in action!

hookshot made a unique ebony handled blade. For the blade itself, it's difficult to find it wide enough to cover the face of the blade, so you'd end up piecing it. It would look nice, but it would be hard and unforgiving.

The stiga ebenholz V has an ebony outer, and it got a rave review!

And I found a site (just to see what the price of ebony is) that has a 7.5" by 72" sheet for $26 without shipping.

A bit more expensive than ipe per square foot. And none of these woods are treated, they are all raw on the site I found, if you want to get them at a decent price.

So yeah, hopefully finding wide enough sheets of ebony won't be a big problem

I received my Ross Leidy blade today, it is amazing, fantastic work by Ross.

It is a similar construction to the Nittaku Acoustic.
Composition: Limba - Limba - Ayous - Limba - Limba
Handle: ST; Orange Agate - Padauk - Ziricote
Weight: 82.5 grams

It looks very nice indeed. You are going to tell us more, aren't you?

At the moment I'm waiting nervously for Sally's Little Sister - she's all finished but Ross is away for Thanksgiving and then catching up with The Old Duffer, so my blade won't make it into the mail until next week. And then who knows how long it will take to deliver.

How long before you summon up the courage to cover the limba with rubber? Nothing but a full report will suffice.

I will tell more once I have a hit with it, might even start it's own dedicated thread It has been tough, but I have just started to get things ready to put rubber on it as I want to have a hit with it tomorrow morning. It really is too pretty to use though, I'm going to be paranoid of damaging it

LOL - I know exactly what you mean. When Sally arrived I held out nearly a week as she arrived early in the week and I wanted to show her to the guys I play with on Friday morning.

It will be interesting to hear what you decide in terms of rubber as your blade is bound to play differently from the Acoustic, even though it's the same composition.

I'm not sure if it shows, but I just love working with wood. I like to use hardwoods for my handles because they have so much character. And while there is predictability in how a particular wood will look when finished, there's always an element of surprise when I apply that initial seal coat and the colors and grain come to life. This is especially true of figured woods. I've been using some premium hardwoods on a few of my blades, and just recently completed a blade for mmerkel over on mytt where I used some Masur Birch for the handle. The result was just a delight (IMO) and I wanted to share a few photos.
