Hello,
I am planning to upgrade equipment soon, and am having trouble deciding which blade to buy. I plan on using Hurricane 8 FH and either Tenergy 64 or Tinarc 5 for BH. I am a two winged looper, decent technique. Would like to have good control close to the table, but also enough speed for mid range loops. Which blade would be best?

Without a doubt, this blade:

After all, Ma Long uses it, he's the best player in the world, and he uses Chinese rubber, right?

Though in a pinch, I think this would do just as well:

This is the one I use.

Blade: Butterfly Matsushita Pro

Although it only shows Cpen version, I enquired and managed to get a FL handle. Same basic blade as a Hurricane Long V.

Looks like Liu Shiwen switched to that blade too.

And Feng Tianwei, which is more unusual. Incidentally, the Fang Bo 2, AKA Hurricane Bo 2, is the same blade as well.

Edit: I should say that Feng seemed to be using the HL 5 in the T2 competition. i couldn't swear to it.

Further Edit: From most recent T2 (Round 5), Feng is using HL3 type blade.

But.. but.. but...

Ma Long don't use it, right? And it doesn't have his picture on it, either... And it's only $60. Can't be all that good if it's only $60..

There's higher class version of the 301 if you want the expensive one...

Are you thinking of the N301 which is on Prott? Which has the HL 5 handle. And is more expensive than an HL 5. Pass. Or W997 or W968 variants, which are constantly out of stock at TTNPP. Pass also.

Ma Long, in common rumour, uses a version of the above, which are all pretty much the same blade, as is the Fang Bo 2, but ML regularly asks for slight changes, so may be slight ply thickness difference, bigger/smaller wings, face size, glue etc. I'd like one with the HL 3 handle, which is much better (thicker) for my grip. I suspect most of us will not really notice these differences.

I believe the H301 (which has a blue/grey dyed face, possibly to prevent its sale as a 968/997?) is the generic composite blade supplied to the team so there are many of these being used in the national centre, along with 506 and variants as the 7-ply wood option. It seems to me that more and more of the team are moving to the composite blade now, and that this trend is being picked in other countries of Asia (Jang Woojin, Feng Tian Wei). Anyway, for under £50, the H301 is a good backup blade. It's even cheaper at TTNPP, but there is fairly hefty delivery charge to add, and they seem to insist that I open a Pay-Pal account now.

I'm just hoping my wrist heals quickly, so that I can stop thinking about equipment, and get on with more playing. My theory is that a composite blade will be a little easier on my wrist. Probably wrong.

I'm content with the lower class version. I like my FB2. Will get the 301 soon too. I was too lazy to get one while in China, now going to have to wait longer for them to be shipped to me.

But why? The one that has Ma Long's face on it will AUTOMATICALLY make you play like Ma Long. #FACT.

I don't want to play like Malong.

I have all Hurricane series blades, except 2 of the Hao.
I have few other dhs blades out of the Hurricane series.

I don't like the idea of customized players blades which might or might not be authentic anyway.

I don't care which players use what blades or rubbers.

So how else can you decide what goes best with Chinese rubbers?

back to topic ;-)

I don't want to ask what is best blade, but which kind of off-blade is generally recommended?
- classical 5ply or 7ply wood
- modern 5ply with hard outer veneers like Stiga rosewood or ebenholz
- carbon blade with soft touch
-...?

Any and all would work depending on what you want to do with it, exactly. Common wisdom seems to be that five ply all wood (e.g. Sanwei M8, Yinhe N11, Stiga Allround Classic) is a good starting point. Want something a little faster? One of those 7 ply Clipper clones. Want something a little harder and money is no object? Maybe get something with a rosewood or ebony top ply. Want something faster and harder yet? Carbon, carbon/arylate, etc. etc. etc.

So what's the answer to your question? There really isn't ONE answer. You have to qualify your question with a few others. And even when you've narrowed it down, there's still dozens of blades in each category.

I dunno. Seems somewhat futile.. Or the wrong question to ask, since these same blades also work as well with, say, Sriver. Or Tensors.

ok., I will try it another way:
are there widely agreed parameters that would work for 80% of the people with chinese rubber on FH (let's say DHS Hurricane 3 Neo)?
- Higher/lower throw?
- flexible/stiff?
- hard/soft feeling?
