I got this test blade from Achim from Re-impact. The code is Perfect 995-2-Si6-S6 MFLR

Not much new equipment surprises me these days as I've tried so many blades from so many manuafcturers, but this new blade is truly extraordinary :o :o :o

A few quick details:
Weight 77g
Thickness 15mm
I love the handle... the thick blade makes the handle real thick too!

The forehand of this blade is very fast, much much faster than my current Tachi+. However the braking effect on the backhand is amazing! I put on my old sheet of dtecs (which is not a slow LP), and it was much slower than Desperado (which is slower and less springy than dtecs) on my Tachi+. It's that slow at low to medium impact, but speeds up at higher impact. However the throw is very low at higher impact, so most of my blocks were still going on. If I can make the forehand work (I like to play slow/medium high spin loops) I'll almost certainly change over.

More to come... here are some pictures (click to zoom in):

Good layer of varnish for protection:

When I first saw this blade, I was impressive by the thickness :o :o :o This is easily the thickest blade I've used!

Bouncing a ball on the bare blade made it feel fast! Although I could clearly feel the difference between forehand and backhand, the difference felt only something like 10%...didn't seem like it was going to be anything more than my Tachi+ :(

Did I mention I love the handle?   I love thick handles on blades, and this was beats them all! The soft feel of the balsa makes it even more comfortable. The blade face was well varnished, clearly more than previous re-impact blade, which I think is very good! Even the handle has clearly been varnished, which will hopefully give it more protection against moisture.

I dressed up the blade with Dr N Goliath 1.5mm which I had lying around and never tried. Although Achim recommended 1.0mm Mark V or similar, I did not have this. On the backhand I used an old sheet of Dtecs which was still in decent condition, but a few pips missing. Since I'm quite familiar with the LP I though it was a good test. I put a thick layer of foam edge tape (which Achim kindly included!) around the huge edge of this blade, to protect this beauty ;)

Firstly the forehand... boy this thing is FAST! The short game was fine... not really too bouncy, which was no doubt partially due to the rubber. Looping work well... slow to medium pace is very spinny...you can feel the kick of the blade coming in, which seems in deed to add a lot of spin as well as speed. Even the sponge of this rubber is relatively soft, it did not really bottom out until I started looping hard. This is when the huge speed kicks in. The throw becomes very low at this point, and the spin reduces...this is not what this combination is meant for... at high speed I must hit. Hitting was a dream...even at medium pace I was cracking winning at high speed. If I tried hitting at full speed I tended to overhit, which took me a while to adjust, but you really don't need to hit that hard to generate a fast ball, the blade provides enormous speed! :o
Blocking was very good too as you'd expect. I could easily control the pace, and only a slightly more agressive block produced a very fast block.

Now for the backhand with the pimples. My first return of serve went into the net. My first block also went into the net. The backhand not only has a huge braking effect, but it seems to reduce the effect of the otherwise springy Dtecs. I was truly amazed and highly impressed!!!

I quickly got the hang of the new pace... and loved it! The strong braking effect made it easier to blocks loops short, and the reversal was very good too! Agressive pushing against backspin was very good too...high reversal and good pace. It was clear that I could not be too aggressive with my pushes, as the speed of the blade clearly increase quickly as I pushes a little harder. Similar attacking balls that were a little high were more easily over-hit, but I quickly got the hang of the new pace, and started to take advantage of it.
Even fast loops I seemed to be able to block really well... although they came of fairly quick, the came off very low and still landed!

I played 3 games with 3 different people that I normally play against regular (all 3 were lower level but they do take games off me), but this bat was clearly a lot more effective against all 3 of them. In all the games I used this new bat first, followed by my latest bat (Tachi+, 999 turbo max, Dr N Desperado OX), and the Perfect was clearly more effective. It block better with the LPs and felt more stable, although for looping I prefer the 999 Turbo on the forehand.

I plan to put 999 Turbo on the forehand of this Perfect blade, and a new sheet of Dtecs on the backhan, to see how well I can make it work.

I've just found out that Achim designed this blade especially for my style... wow what an honour! I've decided the name this blade "Dark Knight", named after my won nickname here

What's it like using a blade that is so thick? Does it feel cumbersome?

Surprisingly not at all! With the thick handle it just feels really solid in your hands.

yes the speed is fast...not sure if it's quite as fast as the R1, but it's close for sure. It's a lot thicker than the R1.

Two of the inner layers may well be cork... not sure, perhaps Achim can tell us. ;)

I glued my regular rubbers on the blade to see how well it would perform... well some good and some bad results :(

A new sheet of Dtecs worked fantastic... seemed even better than the old sheet. My return of serves was very effective, particularly when played a little more aggressive. It felt insensitive to spin and the reversal was excellent, better than with the Tachi+ with an older sheet.

A sheet of 999 Turbo 2.0mm for the forehand was another story. I normally play with Max thickness, and didn't like the feel of 1.8mm on other occasions, so I decided on 2.0mm for this blade. I primed it with some VOC glue a few days beforehand, and then when it had all settles and the VOC dissipated (few days) I glued it onto the bat.

Although I could loop better with it compared to the previous DR N Goliath 1.5mm rubber, I wasn't getting the spin at medium or high speed that I get with my regular setup, nor did I seem to get the same curve on the ball. The combination felt a little 'hard' and seemed to lack the dwell time or spin that I'm used to. It was interesting though that I did not experience the same trouble with the much lower throw at high impact, which I experience with the earlier Perfect and Dream that I tested. I'm not sure if the thickness of the 999 Turbo was the trouble (thinnest is still only 1.8mm) or if the rubber somehow interfered with the Re-impact system, which I know certain rubber do.

Hitting and blocking was significantly better than with my Tachi+ (with the same rubber), but the looping and high spin is the biggest part of my game, so I think I need to find a more suitable rubber.

Of course I did not put on the rubber that Achim recommended (1.0mm Mark V), but I much prefer tacky rubbers for both serving and slow brush loops, so I didn't feel that was an option for me.

I will look for a softer rubber with a tacky topsheet... not sure which one or what thickness yet... I still love the blade, so I'm determined to make it work ;)

Maybe You have a look at the "Spinlord Marder II". This Rubber is very "spinny" not tacky as a Friendship 729 for example but you can create a lot of spin with it. The Marder II is available with thin sponge and the speed is not to slow. I think it maybe work well with your "Dark Knight". I´ll try the Marder II with 1,5mm sponge on my new Swift.

Achim recommended me also a "thin classic rubber" on my forehand, so I ordered a Donic Vario with 1,5mm sponge (it´s a medium+ sponge) and the Marder II with 1,5mm (a little bit softer than the vario and i think a bit more arc and spin as the vario). These two inverted rubbers are the first to test on the forehand with my new Swift-Perfect.

I remember playing with an "Offplay Special" in 2008, it was a real fast Re-Impact Blade. Back than i played a 1,5mm LKT Torrent on the forehand an it worked very well with the Offplay (in spite of the thin sponge speed was enough for aggressive play close to the table).

Greets

Harald
