Blade: Victas Matsushita
FH: hybrid k1 euro
BH: Curl p1r 1.0
I have been playing with Defence 2 for a wile now, before I was playing with Victas Koji blade...
First thing i noticed was thats is defnetly soft, but stiff...
In the First Hit with my tsp curl 1.0 black, i noticed that its dammm slop, its absorved the speed so dam well...
And at the same time my Fh was really fast...
1 thing that i am really missing is the lost of spin that i have with a stiff blade. Cause the victas is flex, so i can produce so much spin with it on my attacks.
And on the Def 2 i will try the Grip-s Europe, cause i found that t64+def2 kind mushy...

I am curious about the exact wood composition and estimation of hardness & flex. Does anyone recognize the striped wood ply? Could the core be ayous?

Pipsy

If I had to guess, I'd say limba outers, spruce medials, ayous core. Spruce is light and fairly soft, but pretty stiff. The very uniform and distinct grain pattern of the medials is very characteristic of spruce.

My impression is that Victas does not feel harder than Def II, they're both medium. Victas is much flexier though... For me, one of the best for FH loops and BH chops. However, I believe that once you can control Def II, you can play a faster looping and chopping game (but not more spinny)

Thank you very much for your expert opinion, Ross!

I think we can be certain about the spruce and ayous. And outer plies limba... Could be, it feels medium-soft to me and is GREAT for looping. Do you think Koto is also possible? How can you visually detect the difference between Limba and Koto?

I will add some extra pictures:

I suppose it could be koto, but koto grain is usually more striated. Here's a photo of a blade with some dyed-grey koto.

Limba could explain the 'modest' weight of the oversized Victas blade (82~88g). But I will examine the Victas outer plies again when I pull off a rubber...

Koto's striated pattern is very visible in the Donic Defplay Senso and I believe it is also the outer ply of the Butterfly Defence Pro. Koto is supposed to be heavier than Limba, my Defence Pro blade (about same size as Victas) is 98g. Defplay is lighter (84g), probably because it has a hollow handle (it is head-heavy).

I will add some pictures of Defence Pro here:

I mixed up Donic Defplay Senso (which has Anigre outer plies) and Donic Defplay Classic (with the striated Koto outer plies). There is no such striated pattern in the outer plies of the Victas, so it is very probable that it is Limba, as Ross Leidy suggested.

Both Donic Defplay Senso and BTY Defence Pro would then have Anigre outer plies. This makes sense because the same OX pips felt clearly harder on my DDS than on my Victas.

Well, Manofan... we were actually quite close 8)

The catalog only mentions that high quality Japanese cedar fir is used in the blade. This must be the medial (striped) ply which we thought was something hinoki-like or spruce. Japanese cedar is from the same family as Hinoki having similar characteristics. Outer plies are definitely Limba which is a soft but non-springy wood.

I got a Victas Matsushita yesterday and it seems to me quality control is lacking a bit, maybe due to the high demand for this blade. The first one I got had many dents and bumps on the backhand outer ply. Not transport damage, just a bad piece of veneer I think. Also glue stains at the top of the handle on both sides.

I exchanged it for another blade and the veneer was much better on that one. However the outer plies still looked vulnerable to me (reminded me of the old tibhar co s3 blade actually which splintered like crazy when removing a rubber). A put a very light cost of varnish on the blade and so far it's holding up fine. Glue stains at the top of the handle of this blade as well.

Blade plays fine, lots of control, a bit much vibration, chops stay low and inverted generates lots of spin. The blade feels a bit similar to the nittaku shake defence I think.

A few months ago I ordered a new Victas Koji Matsushita but THEY cancelled the order due to "quality control" problems. Supposedly at the time they had been getting so many complaints and returns that they weren't shipping out any new blades.
