If you have two of the same blades with a different weight, how does it affect playing characteristics? What style would benefit from or is harmed by it. And why?

Sometimes the weight of one blade can be very very different. My JSH is 102g but I have also heard about JSH blades that weigh 88g, both in original size. Same big differences for VKM: some are 80g, some are 94g...

What's your experience or knowledge about this?

This is a very good question Pipsy!

I have paid close attention to my blade weights, and I too have found some to weigh 12 grams more than other identical models.

And, personally I like lighter blades. So I found that my play was affected in a negative way when I used the heavier one. It could be only psychological, but my hand speed seems to be slower with the heavier setup. Too heavy simply means that I don'y enjoy playing with this heavier one as much.

Affects me very much. A lighter one would cost me some consistency! I even envy one of our club number one who could use any blade and any set-up ( anti, lp and double inverted ) and can still give consistent result.

more weight makes it harder to twiddle, its a greater strain on the fingers/hand..

I like heavy blades around 90 grams.
I seem to loose power or the balance of the blade makes me loose power :envy:
Since i use LP with thin sponge on the bh side i dont like them too light.

I think the balance point has a big influence as well. Defplay senso plays very different with some weight added to the handle but I think this is mostly because the balance point changed and not so much because the overall weight changed.

I have two JSH blades, both with Tenergy 64 1.9mm and TSP Curl P1r 1.4-1.7mm. One blade is very obviously heavier than the other, but I have never measured the difference in weight. Perhaps I am missing something, but to me, the weight difference has no impact on their playing characteristics.

Could you check if the balance point is at the same position on both blades?

I am not familiar with the term "balance point". Is it the same as the centre of percussion?

I would certainly expect if the weight of the two handles are the same and the weight of the two blades differ, or vice versa, that the center of percussion would of the two rackets would also differ.

Just balance the blades on your finger and check if the balance point is at the same position on both blades.

I remember an interview long time ago with Hasegawa the World Champion in 1967 (maybe 1969), in which he said that if he had to do it all over again, he would choose a racket that was heavier than what he had been using. He thought that the heavier racket was more stable and provided more power. Hasegawa was a consistent spinner who was most noted for his stylistic lobbing/fishing defense.

I'm surprised for such a difference in weight... to do with Quality Control or in order to meet more players?

Some heavier blades can feel a bit more sluggish but can offer more power through added firmness and density. Then another important factor to look at is how the weight is distributed, some players prefer the weight in the head of the bat, some in the middle and others in the handle. It all comes down to personal feeling, each person has their own preferences.

The composition also effects a blade too regardless of weight, for example some lighter blades offer less power and speed, while a blade like the Donic Waldner Black Devil is very light and also very fast.

FH: Tenergy 05 2.1 Blk
BH: Tenergy 05 2.1 Red
I've 2 blades of the same make and after resorting to putting them in the oven for a few minutes reduced the Anatomic version to 92 grams and the STraight handle one to 87 grams.
Once the overall bat weight exceeds 187 grams I find that it affects my play and would agree with the previous posts on sluggishness along with affecting the BH particularly on flicks.
I used to think that the 93 grams blade was overweight and used the lighter 87 gram ST blade.
Now after playing for a year I've reverted to the heavier blade using a lighter BH rubber and much prefer the beefier blade getting more power in shots.
I now use the lighter blade with the slightly lighter handle as a backup blade.
On the Black Devil Balsa Blade mentioned by tabletennis11 I had an overweight 88gram one and it was a disaster for me and eventually some poor soul took it off my hands.

I use a Mazunov off plus. At around 100g it does feel a bit heavy. Overall bat weight around 194g.

Tonight found another Mazunov but this one is much lighter!

Overall bat weight down to 182g so a saving of 12g.

Much easier to b/h flick now.

Speed is a little slower but only very marginal.

In my hand it feels so much better.

For me,anything over 185g is too heavy.
