I've got a post running in a separate thread regarding the rubbers so not too concerned about that but are looking for a new blade for my friend in this video (he's the one in blue).



Current set-up
Blade: Andro SC Carbon Light OFF+
FH: Donic Bluefire JP02
BH: Yasaka Mark V

Looking at a blade that suits his style which is go-to shot is to loop on forehand and push on backhand. The general consensus is that his blade is too fast. Thinking of something in the ALL+ to OFF- range.

A couple of specific options are: -
Donic JO Waldner Senso V1 - not a fan of the yellow as it discolours easily however he tends to use some grip tape anyway.
Tibhar Samsonov Alpha - A little concerned that that the head size is a bit small - can anyone confirm this?
Donic Burn - Not sure if a bit hard and stiff due to the "Thermic Burned Technology" or if still a good looping blade.
Tibhar Stratus Powerwood - This seems popular however a little faster perhaps.

Any thoughts?

I agree with your observation concerning blade speed:
His pushes tend to go too high, which suggests that he is either getting deceptive input (not as much underspin as it looks like) or his racket is too bouncy (common reason: blade too fast). When he powers up his forehand, his loops are excellent, but I believe that his looping technique is a bit inconsistent, so his forehand should also benefit from a slower blade which encourages a fuller, more forward stroke.

Any of the blades mentioned should do nicely, possibly except for blade size. I do not recall seeing any difference, but the Samsonov may be smaller. The Waldner Senso is perhaps not the most motivating one to switch to, as I believe it is a bit more flexible than the others. Going from his current carbon blade, that flex may feel wrong to him.

Both can be picked up on e bay second hand.
Buy on e bay and the sell for break even or a small loss-the money that people shell out amazes me sometimes

Thanks for the observations Keme, nice to have the thoughts confirmed but backed by some logic. On the weekend I'm going to have him use my set ups at length, one being Yasaka Extra and the other Appelgren Senso, that should give him an idea. I just hope he doesn't get 'different' confused with not as good.

Based on my experience, Donic Burn Off is too stiff. Should consider Burn off- or Burn All+.

Rubbers we are looking at a Donic Bluefire/Acuda M2/JP02/S2/P2 for forehand
Not sure about backhand yet. Maybe Mark V again or one of the above or similar in 1.8mm

I think those high pushes are dow to technique. He's not getting low for many of his shots, and for the back hand push the head should be forward and low. On forehand strokes he seems to be trying to generate power solely from his arm, little body rotation, and little activation of the quads.

Good se tup he had done with, but I would work on those three key areas on his technique or it will make little difference.

Agree with the above but I think we've pretty much decided that he's just happy now with what he's got and training to improve is not a priority. Good comments though.

First hit with the new bat today. The Tibhar El-p 2.0mm feels similar to every other similar rubber on forehand. The geospin tacky however was considerably slower than previous rubbers on the OFF+. The sole of his pushed were noticibaly slower and less menacing. A couple backhand serves didn't get over the net. I'm hoping that this is partially due to the initial tackiness as the plastic sheet has only just been taken off. Could also just need an adjustment period. I'm also hoping that the slow speed may actually allow him hit the ball harder thereby creating more spin without the fear of the ball going long.

The Geospin Tacky will certainly speed up as the initial tack wear off. The sponge is actually a little bouncy with decent speed, but does not really have the power for hard loops. It's excellent for pushes & chops though, and it should allow him to really load up the spin.

Following our first hit, I said to give it a light wipe before we play next. We practiced again last night and although still slower, he was able to adjust and play quite well. He finds that he needs to put a bit more into it but at the same time I expect that will give him more margin for error ie more 'control'

The forehand again was good and by the end of our session he was playing it quite well and the backhand was pretty close to normal again after the adjustment. Its now starting to look the good set-up that we hoped for.

Unfortunately last night the Donic Burn OFF- took a knock to the table and snapped at the neck. New blade required. Not keen on the Burn again, was good but now a bit suspect of it.

Edit: Purchased Samsonov Alpha.
