Hey guys, so I play a modern defensive game with OX long pips on the backhand and max thixkness inverted rubber on the forehand. For this I've found that the Re-Impact Katana suits my style well (from the re-impact guide). I also have an option of making a custom blade, perhaps with the following combination: Limba-Kevlar Carbon-Ayous-Ayous 3mm-Ayous-Willow. May I get some suggestions as to which would be the better option?

Do you play a close to the table blocking game with the pips Inferno?

I played for 6 months with a Katana once. A fiend leant it to me to try. It was ok, but just ok. The biggest problem I had with it was it didn't have as much power on the FH as I'm used to and I started getting an injured shoulder with it from FH attacks. This may not be an issue for you. I used 388D-1 on it. It played ok with good control, but I didn't feel it was anything special. I think the Tachi is better.

I chop away from the table, it's my main game I guess. But against opponents whose attack is weak, I stay close to the table.

I'd like to add that on my forehand I don't chop at all and play a looping game. Still learning to fish.

I play similar to that, although I have no idea how our levels compare, and for me the Re-Impact Smart works very well for this (see my signature for rubbers). The Katana plays more like a regular blade, and does not offer the advantage the a blade like the Smart offer, when blocking close in.

I think you are obviously more experienced and better in modern defending than me. How does the smart fair when chopping away from the table? And on the forehand I think that the smart does not support max thickness rubbers. Those are the only thickness available in my area so I guess I'll have to order rubbers from online. Oh and how's looping on the forehand? I have conventional long strokes for both looping and chopping.

The Smart chops very well away from the table.
The Smart is one of the few Re-Impact blades that does allow a rather conventional looping stroke, most of the others have too flat a trajectory. Still there will be some adjustment.
If you use a Chinese rubber, than max should work fine, but if you use a German/Japanese modern tensioned-style rubber, then a thinner sponge works a lot better... The blades makes the rubber feel like it's got a thicker sponge on attack, whereas you get the benefit of a thinner sponge for the short game or defensive strokes.

Damn. Say I use a Victas 401 1.8 mm on forehand. Compared to a max thickness tensor rubber how will the speed fair? Will it be in the OFF range?
