I recently bought a DHS PG7 but before i put my rubbers on i would like to know if i need to put varnish on the blade. I read on the dhs website that the pg7 is "laquered by a special technique", does this mean that i do not need to varnish it. Thank you for any responses

I didn't seal mine the first time I used it. But I did after changing rubbers. I used Andro Free Seal, which does not appear to have any effect on the play. TBH, I don't know if it was necessary, but I have found that some rubbers have very fragile sponges, and the lacquer is more to protect them (and make it easier to get them off). Some people suggest that water based glue is inherently bad for unsealed wood, and they may well be right. I wouldn't recommend thick varnish though.

Most of the DHS PG-series blades have splintery top-plies. So you MUST varnish them if you dont want to damage the blade when you peel off the rubbers.

I have used acrylic paint canvas matte varnish and the usual wood water-based polyurathane varnish. Best result I had is when I dried the varnish for 24hrs and lightly sanded it before sticking rubbers on them. Always apply thin and uniform layer over the entire blade.

After actually splintering one of my blades (a 729 - what was it, C3? The one with the cork center.) I seal all of mine also. I use Keme's method - oil-based polyurethane varnish applied very lightly with a paper towel.
