Post subject:  Reducing blade size
I'm looking to take a couple mm off around the sides of my Lebesson to make it in line with my other blades so that I can swap rubbers between my blades.

How would be best to do this?

Would it change properties. Obviously would be a few grams lighter, what about speed?

I've trimmed two of my blades by a few mm. Having an existing blade of the preferred size makes it easier since you can use it to make a template. I used a thin sheet of hard plastic but cardboard would work just as well. I cut it to size, positioned it on the new blade and drew the outline on both sides with a marking pen. I carefully used 2 different grades of sandpaper on a small block of wood to get a neat even edge. I noticed a slight increase in stiffness. I didn't notice a difference in speed but theoretically that is possible.

Did that lots of times with old chopping rackets that tend to be rather huge. In those cases used a coping saw to take off most of the wood, then sand to final shape.
If you take wood from the tip end, making the blade shorter, it will get faster. Taking wood only from the sides only won't be as noticeable.

Sanding right up to to a carefully drawn line is the best. A spinning disk or drum sander with a table to hold the blade at 90 degrees to the sanding disk is ideal, but block of wood and sandpaper is fine if you are careful to hold it at 90 degrees and go slow and check the line constantly. A couple mm should not be much change in speed. With those old chopping blades, sometimes 4 or 5 mm could be lopped off to bring it down to average size.

my dad has reduced the size on 4 of my blades .im not sure what he did but i will find out for you.
i find oversized blades cumbersome when using the forehand.when reduced the blade is less flexible and i think a tiny bit faster,
The blades were-
donic defplay senso
butterfly grubba pro x 3.
if you take one of the rubbers from your normal smaller blade just use that as a template :clap:
my dad cut the defplay down and i reduced a little futher with sandpaper-took about 2hrs-as mentioned i used the rubber template

This is what a router is for.

You'd need to create a way to line them both up but a router will line things up perfectly. Maybe talk to someone who works with wood for a living.

I'd suggest a band sander if just removing a mm or two. A blade might cause splintering.
