(I use OX long pips on backhand, primarily for close-to-the-table blocking, and short pips on forehand.)
I am looking for a blade that has the following combination of characteristics:

- oversized
- light (below 80 grams would be best)
- stiff (to allow for high reversal when blocking passively)
- containing a carbon/fiberglass layer (to widen the sweet spot)

Does such a blade exist? Would be grateful for any recommendations.

I just got one of those: TSP Black Balsa 3.0. Weighs like 60 g. Provides amazing control. I put Dornenglanz on it and the reversal is great, probably because the blade is slow and stiff. Another solid choice is Andro Fibercomp but it could be a little over 80g.

Nachalnik turned me on to the bty gionis carbon def. pairs nicely with talon.
It feels pretty light to me. For an oversized blade.
I've heard the black balsa is good. I've also heard the tsp trinity carbon is great. There is a thread on here about it. Sounded tempting to me, but no clue if it's oversized.

I, like you, used the firestarter blade. And it's fantastic for the old ball. I feel the new plastic ball needs the carbon. Don't ask me why. But that's the way it feels for me. Makes it not feels so utterly weird.

Yes Trinity carbon ticks all the boxes, except that it's not oversize.

TSP Black balsa blades are NOT oversize !!! Much smaller head compared to most blades. TSP versal might be more the size you want.

Yes, it's hard to find something that ticks all the boxes. I've actually been trying out the Trinity Carbon after having used the Re-impact Smart for awhile, and the problem I'm having is that the ball keeps going right off the edges due to the very small racket head size. Maybe I'll get used to it, since it's only been a few weeks so far.

TSP Versal doesn't seem to have any carbon or fiberglass in it, from what I'm seeing. The TSP Black Balsa's marketing material does say this: "This high-end blade features a balsa core and a slightly larger head for maximum control in all stroke techniques." I'm hoping that maybe SLIGHTLY larger will be sufficient for what I need.

At 80 grams, it's kind of at the upper limit of what I want weight-wise, but I'd consider it.

I was looking into the Andro Fibercomp, but the weight is probably going to be a bit too high for me. The newer Andro Defcon DEF, however, is an option I'm looking at. The one thing I'm wondering with that blade, however, is how high the reversal is going to be given the lack of balsa and the soft, high-dwell wood used in that. If anyone has tried this blade out, I'd be curious.

I guess there's nothing that does it all. Thanks, guys, for all your responses thus far. Very helpful.

The Gambler Oversize Carbon is a giant Hock-style blade which nominally weighs in right at 80g, though the one I tried a few weeks ago felt much lighter than that. It felt pretty stiff when I played with it, in spite of the ad copy. The sweet spot was indeed huge. The FL handle is very small (I have big hands and it wasn't comfortable due to the small size), supposedly the ST handle is bigger/normal sized. Costs $32.

There's also a Kevlar version that's supposed to be slower and have more flex.

Nittaku Shake Defence, although,

It have 2 layers of carbon to offset it thinness. You did asked for "a". :P

Renan

And another vote to Defcon. ;)

To get an oversize blade below 80g, it's going to have to be Balsa. Note that a thick balsa blade will give you both stiffness AND a large sweetspot, you don't need a composite layer for this. Re-Impact have many in this catagory.

Doesn't Dr. Neubauer also stock large Oversize blades ? Composite or Combination type right ?

TSP Black Balsa 3.0 is oversized. In fact the only secondhand rubber I could find for it came from the NSD which is huge. It's smaller than the NSD but on the par with Gionis def.

I second nanchalnik; TSP Black Balsa 3.0. Its a defensive blade(not that fast), oversized, very light, stiff, and has fibreglass layers. Though its head thickness may be too thin for some(its around 4mm), its fits your description.

Well, most of Dr Neubauer blade are larger than 16 cm * 15 cm, ~ Defplay size. ;)

The only Dr. Neubauer blade I found that has carbon in it is the Dr. Neubauer World Champion Carbon. I've never heard of it and don't really see reviews, but it's also right at that 80g limit, weight-wise.

Yeah, I was thinking Balsa would be required as well, though the Andro Defcon doesn't appear to have balsa and is 75g, oversized and has carbon layers. I'm not sure about the spin reversal though, since the principal wood it uses (ayous) is known to be quite soft.

Nittaku Shake Defence is a great blade but way too heavy. Have you used the Defcon? It's tempting, but I don't see many reviews, and as I said above, I'm not sure how good the spin reversal would be.

I see that the confusion is that there's a difference between the size of the Black Balsa 3.0, which is oversized, and the thicker Black Balsa blades, which aren't. I think I'll try out the 3.0, since it seems to have all the characteristics I'm looking for.

Try it. It's an interesting experience. I have a 1.7 Rasant Beat on it. All my loops are on the table now, slow and really spinny. Dornenglanz is OK but I'll also try the Talon as I think I need to speed things up somewhat. Enjoy!
