I'm an advanced beginner, still developing, committed to playing JPEN. Currently I play with a 5-ply blade, but most people seem to recommend a single ply Hinoki racket for the classic style.

There's a lot of talk about Darker Kiso Hinoki etc. which I'm sure I'll get to try out some years down the line - for now, I don't think I'll get much out of spending hundreds on a blade. Does anyone have experience with alternatives like the YINHE 982 or Sanwei R2, or others? Are there any known pitfalls to avoid, or things to look for when ordering online?

Welcome to your J-Pen journey!

You can order a butterfly T-Max directly through butterfly's website which is around &150 USD normally but at 10% discount right now).

No denying the quality of Butterfly here... and its a relatively great price for a single ply hinoki blade.
I have no experience with those mentioned Sanwei or Yinhe blades..but i can only speak positives about Bty hinoki blades.

There were 2-3 mail order outlets in Taiwan that were selling one-ply hinoki (even Kiso Hinoki) blades for significantly less than what Butterfly, Armstrong or Darker wants for them. I came across them maybe 5-6 years ago, I'll bet they're still in business.

By the way - if you can find Armstrong's catalog online it's worth a peek. They were the company that made Satoh's 1952 World Champ racket (that started the huge gravitation towards sponge) and in their catalog you'll find all sorts of variations of Japanese Penhold blades - all manner of blade shapes and handles, including some two-sided "Rotor" types for twiddling, and some weird undercut ones. Never actually found out what those were for.
