Has anyone tried out the new hybrid Ice Cream yet? One side is made for forehand and the other side has different material for backhand. Sounds logical to me given that rubbers already do that. It's a natural progression to have a blade with specific characteristics too. Obviously this is only for shakehand style but I would think JPen could use it too.

I must admit it gave me a case of the giggles when I came across them. I mean.. Ice Cream??? Are you serious???
Two speed blades are not a new idea, and you don't really have to look very hard for them.

Though it’s not a new idea, most of them are geared toward defensive minded speed/style. I’m sure in short while many brands and models will follow Ice Cream as well.

I doubt most regular club players would be able to tell the difference between ALC and ZLC on differing sides. Remembering that whats on one side of the blade effects the other side.

Ross Leidy once told me that he could only realistically achieve approx 15% speed difference between different sides. And that was incorporating thick balsa layers. Take into account Ross's work is all hand made, with phenomenal workmanship and attention to detail.

These new blades are probably just sales/marketing.

I would have to disagree. I've tried dozens of different blades with similar rubber combinations. They all affect the shot differently. The type of wood, carbon, weight and balance all have an effect. Of course the most important aspect is how it fits the player's style and technique.

I'm very curious to try these new blades and if it's not astronomically expensive I'd be willing to buy one.

I have a custom asymmetric blade. I use it as backup. It has a Kiri core layered by ALC, then Limba - and then a Koto outer and an Anegre outer layer.

It’s an experiment and it works well. Still, I moved to a symmetric setup. Same rubbers too. Gives less things to ponder.

There are a couple of YouTube videos (which is where I came across the things - I haven't actually watched the videos yet, but they popped up as "suggested videos"):

So yeah, it's got arylate-carbon on one side and zylon-carbon ("zephylium" ) on the other. They make two versions, a "regular" one and an "innerforce" one. From what I've read, zylon is stiffer than arylate (so that side should be stiffer and harder, and therefore faster). I wonder why they don't try "regular" on one side and "innerforce" on the other side?

Or composite on one side and all-wood on the other.
