Personally , I don't like Hinoki . I found to be too soft . Any soft rubber seems to me hard on a hinoki blade.

I am very confused here. On the one hand, you find hinoki to be too soft. Yet it is so hard that it makes a soft rubber feels hard??? Or are you saying that even a soft rubber feels harder than a hinoki blade??? :?

Cheers.

I am saying that a soft rubber feels to me not soft on a hinoki blade.

Speedplay
I have had the JUIC Kiso Hinoki with the Couga and 999 EN rubbers (plus others) and whilst the linear power was somewhat addictive it was hard work to play with..compared to my Wavestone or TSP Reflex 50.
I found that I had to play strokes 'by the book', it was short on defensive rebound (In this regard it felt similar to my balsa) and it 'wouldn't lift the ball over the net'...as one veteran put it.
I was happy to get back to my Wavestone....

I don't really know what to make of this: should I be better off using a 1-ply blade? I'm looking for control in particular, not so much for speed.

-Ayous being a type of harder wood, I guess the Galaxy J-1 won't suit my needs.
-And for 1-ply hinoki's, they seem to be better suited for Penhold players than for Shakehanders (like myself). However, they are generally known for their 'touch' and 'feel', and tend to work with harder rubbers as well (like my friendship Higher III)

-And last but not least, 1-ply blades have a certain exclusivity to them, and a rather big cool-factor 8)

So I really can't make up my mind. Before this discussion, I had narrowed down my blade options to 2 blades: Blackwhirlwind and Galaxy J-1. But now I think the J-1 may be too fast. But hey, 1-ply's are cool!

So unless someone can give me a real good reason not to go for the blackwhirlwind, I think I'll pass on the 1-ply's for now...

Still interested in the question raised by Jasper, how does one ply blades act different compared to other multiply blades?

They generally have more gears, and because they're thicker they have less vibration. I've noticed that they have much higher top end speed- if you swing harder, some multi-ply blades will top out eventually, whereas you can just keep cranking up the power with a single-ply. The rest of the characteristics depend on the wood you're using, but I haven't seen a single-ply yet that would be really well suited to a chopper.

Oh, that never occurred to me. You're not using pips for chopping anymore, you're using anti. That might pair well with hinoki if the sponge is thick enough, seeing how well hinoki is suited to normal inverted rubbers. I bet a really hard sponged anti would actually be quite nice paired with a thick single ply blade. I'm not sure how Elite Nano would feel on it, though, since my Elite Ultima felt too soft on my last hinoki Jpen once it got a bit broken in.

I have been making 1-ply blades out of various types wood for probably
5 years, and the biggest advantage of 1-ply blades that I have found is that
they they allow you to retain control during the short game
yet allow plenty of power for looping. Multi-ply blades "may" be better
for blocking and smashing.

I am really not sure what the advantages of carbon blades are yet.
I played with a Schalger carbon at my club the other day and it felt
like a piece of concrete.

If chopping is the same like backspin on and near the table, I have no problem in doing it with my single ply hinoki. :)

HI Speedplay: I have to remind you about Andro Krypto. It was the centre of your universe for 1+ year ... until you tried it.

Lets hope this blade isn't something similar.

If you Google "Speedplay Haggisv Mathias" the thread that appears is:
http://www.tabletennis.gr/forum/forum_p ... =7966&PN=1

and gives some idea of the Krypto saga.

Speedplay you should compose a Nordic saga / song about your exploits with SB and interest in Krypto, along the lines of Beowulf. The saga is somewhat legendary.

Something like:
Speedplay the strong slew the fowl, stinking beast from the depths with a single sheet of SB and Krypto has was never far from his mind.
With repeated blocks was the beast slain.
Its ferociousness smashed against the beast bane
And never again would curse the pips that slew it
Nor speak ill of the darkside
and so on...

The tt players of Sweden will sing the song of Speedplay long after you hang up your bat and the 'beast bane of Speedplay' is forever lost to the ITTF regulations. In time it would otherwise simply slip unnoticed into history...

I still reckon Krypto would have been better if it actually had the little letters moulded on the end of the pips

Indeed and those letters would read....
" S P E E D P L A Y . T H E . S T R O N G"

and so the legend continues...
