Ok, I said I'd post some pics of me sealing my KLC, so here they are:

1. The product I'm using is Cabot's Cabothane that I bought from Bunnings. A water-based clear varnish that is low-odour and fast drying (3 hour recoat time). The instructions on the can recommends 3 coats, with a light sanding after each coat. This one is a Satin finish. Even though it appears milky white in the can, it's clear when applied.

Image

2. The 1st freshly applied coat on my KLC. Now I have to wait at least 3 hours before I give it a light sanding. I'm going to use 800-grit wet/dry paper with a sanding block.

I thought you were getting it through work GP? Or does work give you a discount voucher to take to Bunnings?

Hi Guitarpug,
That is a very good brand and very similar to the water based Verithane. The wood is pretty tight grained and 3 coats will give a Very smooth surface. You might want to think about two coats first unless you have done this before. You can always add one more coat later if you clean any glue off well first.
Two coats will make it totally water proof. Three should look like a table top. On more open grain, it might take three coats to fill the grain but that looks like pretty tight grain. :D

Reb: Yeah I was going to, but I can only get a discount if I buy it from a Dulux Trade centre, and they close after 5pm. Bunnings is open till 9pm and I was just driving by and was more convenient. It was only around $25...

hookshot: Yes, of course it's a good brand! Actually I considered using Intergrain or Feast Watson for a sec, but then common sense took over (it's only a TT bat for goodness sake!). I checked this morning and even with one coat it looks pretty shiny, so I will take your advice to only use 2 coats (thank you!). :)

More pics to come!

Ok, another progress update:

After letting the 1st coat dry naturally overnight, I've lightly sanded it back with 800 grit wet/dry sandpaper. When I say 'lightly sanded', I mean I only made 2-4 gentle passes, feeling the surface with my hand after each pass. My objective is to remove the small ridges left over from application so that the surface is flat. I don't really want a glossy finish and from the image below, you can see that it's a nice satin finish (as decribed on the can).

Image

These are the pics of the sandpaper I used, and my 'sanding block' which is actually a DI box from my home studio.

Image

Finally, after another night of natural drying, I applied the second coat. Because I've only applied 2 layers, it hasn't really altered the look of the blade. In fact Cabothane is touted to let the natural look of the wood shine through, so it looks like it works as described so far. However, that lovely hinoki smell is gone! :(

Image

Once I sand this 2nd coat, I'll work on the edges, and when that's done, I'll weigh the blade before I put any rubbers on it. Stay tuned!

BB, there is but cannot find it at the Rockdale branch. That is why I settled on the Jo Sonja varnish.

GP, very good looking work there. How you going to seal the edge? Superglue? That is what I use after that mishap when I knocked the edge against the table. Now, with superglue, it is hard and don't increase the weight of my blade. Oh, I put 3 layers of superglue.

Cheers.

Hey that's not 1 coat!

And I dare say my blades sealed total rivals yours. My method is very different to the above though - The above is more or less painting it on, which will be thicker than your 0.0075 figure

You should be able to find Cabothane at most Bunnings stores, or failing that, any Dulux Trade centre or 3D paint stores. There's a 3D store in Rockdale.

I'm going to seal the edge the same way - 2 to 3 coats of Cabothane. Then I'll use edge tape to protect it. :D
