Post subject:  New blade to replace old Butterfly Surbek

I'm after my 1st new bat in 30 years. I'll stick with Sriver both sides because its what I'm used to and its still around. But my old Butterfly Surbek blade which was very popular in the late 70's certainly isn't - from another website I found this about the Surbek:

'5.5mm Basswood for all-round play'

I'm very much an attacking player but need something that will promote control rather than speed; guess that means a large sweet spot would help?

Any recommendations?

Maybe there are some 2nd hand blades on offer?

Hey guys -you must have SOME recommendations??!! I'd like something not too fast but that promotes control, and I'd be happy to give carbon fibre a go (tried a carbon fibre something-or-other recently that seemed very nice but forgot to make a note of what it was). Budget is around AUS$100-150 for the blade.

Gee, pure basswood? Grubba Pro or Jonyer Hinoki might be closest in speed and feel, but then again, they aren't made out of basswood. :?

U R craving the Butterfly Kenny pro or the X-Star. Both are made from bass wood and are fighting with Schildkrot premades for the slowest mass=production blade on the planet.

I think they are actually DEF or DEF + speed class blades.

Greg, not many plaers have use the Surbek (BTW I did see one on Ebay recently for $50). So it's difficult for us to answer you. I would just say try a can't-go-wrong blade like a Butterfly Korbel or Butterfly Primorac OFF-. (I have one for sale but only if you are in the USA.)

Thanks guys. Does the fact that it is made of Basswood mean its pretty slow by today's standards?

JSR Dallas on Dennis TT World forum makes a really good breakdown of the properties of every wood imaginable used for TT blades. Hookshot (Hope you are enjoying China you young teenager!) could also throw in quite a bit to this one.

Just because it is Basswood, doesn't necessarily mean that the blade has to be a turtle. BTY just decided to make a high control blade that doesn't cost so much to make.

JUIC makes the Kalinic blade. Speed is All+ to Off-.
It is slightly larger than average, all basswood, generates good spin.
Can weigh 90 gr. or more.

remembering butterfly surbek blade from late '70s, anatomical handle, slightly cornered head..a long range classical defender player
was playing with that blade, first with thin srivers on it, after tackiness Cs came and he changed them..I was playing with that blade sometimes too...medium hard feel, allround speed... maybe same or just a little bit faster than todays grubba pro... recommendations: butterfly cutlass and grubba pro, nittaku kvu, stiga allround classic..

Here's a list (1984) comparing the different BTY blades. It comes from the back of a Des Douglas blade box :

Surbek blade is considered as rather slow, so you have to search in All- or Def+ blades.

BTW, GH, if you decide to sell your Surbek blade, I'm interested. ;)

Thanks guys. Think I'll give the Korbel or Primorac a go. Also have an opportunity to pick up a Butterfly Maze Passion cheap which has glass fibre layers. Anyone used this blade? Like to be a bit adventurous rather than stick with a Surbek like slowish blade.
