I am a lower level (about 1200-1300 USA) player trying to get back into table tennis.
What rubber thickness should I be using? I have had a 2000 level player tell me that I should be using AT LEAST a 2.0mm for offensive play. Others say 1.8mm is the thickest rubber that I should be using.

I would reccomend an allround setup, Sir
Being offensive AND controlled at your level would be best, Sir.

1.8mm classic rubbers (non-tensor) on an allround allwood blade would be best I say
That's the rule of the thumb for developing players, including me imo.

I recall reading somewhere some tests done that revealed the scientific effect sponge thickness had on ball speed, and it was fairly marginal IIRC. I think it comes down to your personal preference and feel. Don't restrict yourself to this or that based on what someone else thinks. I know very good players who use Max thickness sponge and very good players who use 1.8 thickness. I know average players who use max and many who use thinner as well. Thinner sponge does tend to give a little more control feeling, thicker sponge gives a better catapult feel in general. Thicker sponges are less likely to bottom out in a loop. Its a matter of what gives you a feeling of confidence in your play that will count the most IMO.
