Up until recently I've always had a thicker sponge on my forehand. Recently I switched to a softer sponge and balsa blade from a wood/carbon combination with harder sponge. in doing so I've also dropped down in sponge thickness from max on my forehand to 1.8mm and truth be told, I have far more control and spin doing so. Maybe the ball stays in contact with the rubber surface marginally longer helping spin generation with the softer sponge. Maybe the softer sponge bottoms out quicker so the balsa blade is able to contribute to the pace of my shots more. Either way, if I can get rid of the notion that paying the same amount of money for different sponge thickness means I should get the thickness sponge available (more sponge per pound), this has been an interesting wake up call for me.

Out of interest how many people play with a thinner sponge on their forehand and is it a soft or hard sponge and what blade do you use.

Cheers

I picked thicker and harder, but my FH is just harder.
I use max sponge on both sides.

For me it's thicker, since I hit much harder through the balls on forehand compared to backhand, and I don't want the rubber to bottom out. If you go softer, you might need to go thicker, or the rubber will bottom out earlier.

Bottoming out is not necessarily bad of course... if you're hitting/smashing the ball then it becomes easier if the rubber bottoms out, as you tend to get more speed and it's less sensitive to incoming spin.

I find it amazing that implicit in this poll is the assumption, as if it was God's Law, that All Players Shall Use Different Rubber on Forehand and Backhand.

Sorry if it came across I was trying to be God. It's a simple question.

The option to specifiy same thickness should have been included but it was based on my own experiences. Where would I draw the line in options though. Same thickness but different hardness. Same thickness. Can't add it now as it will delete all answers given todate.

I've always associated forehand with power and backhand with control. From a personal point of view, whilst I've enjoyed max thickness on my forehand, I've never liked it on my backhand. Too lively. Plus, my backhand shots are different to my forehand - hence the variation in rubber.
