A friend sent back a bat for me to look at, because the rubber had somehow split. The rubber is FX-P, which is quite a durable rubber from my experience.
I was very surprised when I saw it, the split is about 20mm long, and it's not just the topsheet, but it's split through the sponge as well!

Although rubber is well worn, apart from the split, there is absolutely no sign of damage where. No marks on the rubber, and NO marks on the edge of the blade. Since the blade is balsa (Re-Impact), slightly bumps would easily show as little dents, but there is nothing there at all!

Have any of you seen this happen to a rubber, where it's split through both the topsheet AND sponge?

Not sure but I have seen instances where a BH push or jab hits the table usually with the Black rubber will not show up any marks but the sponge and topsheet split from the blade edge inwards. But that is a HUGE rip. The ones I've seen tend to be smaller and run along the edge. Usually Tenergy or similar expensive rubbers :-P Or any rubber with a difficult to cut sponge.

If seen damage like that topsheet, and quite often for Chinese rubber, when we accidentally hit something, like table, with so thin but powerful impact.

But never ever cut through the sponge.

But, Rather than impact,

I lean to blame sudden temperature change, like hot parking car to ACed room, as the culprit. Violent shrinking and expansion can damage the rubber, theoretically. :D

I just did the same exact damage removing the Sanwei Target National rubber where a small split at the edge just grew while I was removing it :-( So now I am trying to fit the damn thing on my BB7 blade so I can cut as much of the damage out as possible.

I suspect the problem of this kind with the rubber+sponge combo where topsheet is super flexible ( or extreme tension / stretched ) and sponge is a flaky monster crumbling at a touch.

Yasaka Shining Dragon is also on a sponge that is SUPER flaky and crumbly.

This is reminding me more and more of how Palio Thors is also a flake / crumble monster of a rubber :'( :headbang: :punch:

That happened to a friend of mine. He saved 4 weeks worth his money to buy a sheet of Tenergy and it accidentally clipped the side of the table. He cried.

I feel for him. My current setup is also my very first, and my Mark V already has about 3-4 splits similar to what the picture shows (thankfully, the sponge remains perfectly fine and the cuts are way smaller in length... maybe 5-8mm at most)

I've seen tenergy fall to bits but not other rubbers, I have seen people post pictures of split rubber but I don't know how they do it, I hit the ball hard and I've never broken one _ever_

This looks just like the moment I put some new Tenergy on and proceed to hit the end of the table...

Major reason I don't use tenergy anymore - no insurance.

In this case my friend claims he did not hit the table at all...and there is not a single mark on the rubber or blade either.

I've done that before. Sometimes you just get the right (or wrong) impact angle and the ball breaks both topsheet and sponge.

I don't guess he uses a paddle shaped case to store the racket? Probably not, just was considering other ways it might have been damaged. I have a small Bfly version of this case that has an annoying habit of gnawing at the rubber at the top where the zipper is, especially if you use thick sponge.

If the top sheet and sponge are boosted, then soft rubbers are susceptible to this. It is not common but it does happen, not usually both top and sponge. It usually happens after 3-6 months or longer, not when new. Tenergy rubber is soft so it can happen after rejuvenating / reboosting.

A good thought, and I agree, but this rubber certainly wasn't boosted, since I always glue the rubbers onto the bat for this person.
