This is a Bluefire M3 1.8mm. The spot where the finger rests seems to have dissolved :o

The rubber is quite worn and used as you can see, but the player requested I ask Donic about the damage, as he feels it's a manufacturing fault. To me it's pretty obvious that it's caused by the contact of the finger, and the acid of the skin eating into the rubber over time. The fact that it's quite a soft rubber and it's only 1.8mm, would have made it more fragile. I must admit I've not seen one this bad though. :o

I'll ask Donic as he requested, but I very much doubt they'll regard it as a manufacturing fault.

PS The black bit hanging off the bat is some black tape which he uses to cover the hole.

Have you seen something like this?

That looks kind of like some extra oil or solvent got transferred to it from the fingers.

I've had Tibhar Grass Dtechs melt like that. It turned to soft sticky tar like goo in one area that you could pinch and pull away. It happened when something spilled on it while it was glued to a blade and in a storage box with other rackets.
Sorry I don't know what substance did it, but probably a liquid leaked from a bottle on a work table above the racket box. Only the Dtechs melted. I had assumed that it was because the Dtechs has some kind of different formula, perhaps more synthetic or plastic added to it, as opposed to natural rubber.

I own a Red Bluefire. Same damage in the middle from using RPB I guess.

Glad this answered where that nasty mark came from.

Have I seen anything like this? Yes, on very, very old bats, usually rec-quality ones, that have seen years and years of use. I've also had rubber practically melt on me. Always specific brands - 999, and that weird Yung mushroom-pips rubber Eacheng sells. The Yung was a sheet I bought over 30 years ago in Singapore, it also ruined the bat next to it!

How old is this rubber?? Can't be anywhere near that old, of course...

I think the rubber is about a year old, with plenty of use.

I tend to agree, but some people expect years of high performance for such an 'expensive' rubber. :o
