Would really appreciate some info on how the performance of classic medium hard rubbers such as mark V and Musa typically changes with sponge thickness.
I have found that Musa 1.8 & 2.0mm on TSP balsa all to all+ blades feel quite different with the 2.0 feeing slightly softer with perhaps less balsa effect due to the thicker sponge. What would a switch to max lead to. Can one still chop ok with max?

My experience was that with classic rubbers, it's more or less essential to play with max sponge, if you don't want to be massively exerting yourself to impose yourself on the ball. I used Sriver L Max, and found I could chop with it ok, but it's pretty slow compared to a modern all-round tensor. Thinner sponge is fine, but slower yet. Better for chopping and hitting, but really not much penetration.

I played a friend this week, who uses Sriver, and it felt quite slow coming onto and off the table.

Nothing wrong with these rubbers - nice quality - but with two generations of ball change, they do feel quite a bit different to something modern like a TSP Regalis, a Rasanter, or a Stiga Mantra - all of which are quite controllable, high quality rubbers, that you could comfortably use in 1.8.
