I'm likely going to invest in Tenergy 05 or the FX version in the next week or two, but I'm torn between 1.9mm and max thickness. A few weeks back, I would have been more keen on 1.7mm. However, recent tests with inverted have made me think that thicker sponge, while giving less control when chopping, gives a more dangerous ball. By dangerous, I mean the flight path with thicker sponge seems to be less direct, both for hitting and chopping, which would seemingly make it more difficult for your opponent. I recently tried a defenders rubber and I could hit hard with it, but in 1.8mm, the flight path was so straight and controlled that I felt I was giving my opponent extra control as well. This is no good. I was giving a much more dangerous ball with Acuda S1 max thickness with every shot. Heavy backspin/sidespin chops Ma Te style were also much more effective with Acuda.

At the moment, I chop maybe 60-70% of the time on my forehand. With this in mind, a lower thickness would seem preferable. However, with my backhand (using FL3 1.1mm) being my consistent wing now, I feel I need to balance my forehand accordingly.

I don't think you'll benefit from a thicker sponge in chopping... I think generally players use a thicker sponge because they also want to attack, and in attack it can be beneficial.

It's a decision you have to make. Either you want high risk high return, or more consistency.

For me I opt for consistency. I beat many players who when attacking are way better than me. I surrender those points when they're attacking powerfully/dangerously, but me letting go 3-5 of those points are okay since I get many more points and win the games by getting more consistent in getting the ball back on the table.

In most cases, thicker sponge absorb speed better, but more susceptible to spin.

Furthermore, there are several ways for pips to be dangerous.
- By returning the opponent spin for this pips. This for Superblock lover. thinner sponge or ox is better
- By randomising spin. For this pips, something arount 1.25 mm is better for me
- By hijacking spin. Basically play like inverted with extra leeway in timing. Stranger and Feint Long III play like this. You can even put 1.5 mm sponge for this long pips.
- Attack!!!
