I just switched from VS>401 to MX-S and was surprised to find that I didn't really lose out on my chopping (but I gained some top end speed).

That was my take on it as well. The mx-s feels like a slightly faster version than the 401, but still very controlled. They both have similar feels - hard sponges, ultra grippy top sheet with only a hint of tack

I think I preferred either of those to my tenergy rubbers, at a much cheaper price!

If you discount the absolute elite Chinese choppers who use a fast H3 for chopping, the majority of amateurs in China (which are still extremely good) use a softer sponge in their H3 for chopping and a 1.8-2.0mm thickness. I personally swapped from T05 -> T05H -> H3-50 with a 2.0mm sponge and after the swap chopping is ridiculously easy. It's a pretty cheap rubber and after boosting it with a few layers of Falco you get actually insane control and spin to your chops while still being able to attack relatively well if your blade is not too slow.

Where do you find a 1.8mm sponge?

The players in China had all sorts of weird sponges ranging from supposedly even from 1.6mm to MAX. This was according to the players I talked to. I personally havent found softer H3's below 2.0mm in european market.
