Looking for suggestions on smooth chopping rubbers with thin (ie, 1.5) sponge. Needs to really suit beginners through to intermediates. Possibly advanced too.

This isn't for me.

Globe magicwand 1.5mm... it's tacky, not all that fast with a fairly soft sponge... and real cheap... a player at my club uses it for chopping and likes it...

If I were doing this I'd do the Greg Letts thing of using Jap topsheet.
The spin is ok not brilliant but it does handle incoming spin and importantly allows an easy switch between float and inverted. A sticky Chinese rubber isn't the easiest to use for floated returns.

The problem really starts about combining this with attacking capability. BTY Chop performs well IMO but useless at attacking. Chop II might be ok, Tackiness Drive etc... BTY TSS is too tacky IMO

I'm not a chopper though so can't comment. One of our choppers Greggy uses Xiom 1.2 mm.

IMHO a soft topsheet and sponge easily makes up for a non-sticky topsheet- as more of the rubber area contacts the ball, and the topsheet has a 3-d grip due to the ball sinking in more. For me this beats the [warm place] out of trying to acheive a perfect ball grazing motion for every spin based attacking stroke.

When defending- it's a bit easier to chop heavy topspin (as Mathias said) and I can create much more underspin than with hard tacky rubbers.

For cheap, I'd recommend 729 Supersoft if it came in 1.5 or 1.2 mm.
Medium $, perhaps Joola's Topspin C, as not being a tensor it should last longer than the likes of Tango.

BTW, Paul P became Aust champion several years in a row chopping with anti on his b/h. You said smooth, does it need to be grippy?

Stiga Cobra or Yasaka Visco in 1.5mm.

Something a little cheaper 729 FX.

Yeah, I was supposed to look for sticky or highly grippy.
