I had a great fun night tonight, I entered a hardbat competion, where all players had to use identicle bats (some kind of cheap generic Dunlop) bats, apparently some were thicker than others but I never looked , I just took what was left on the table
there were about 30 entries, and the names and the draw were , drawn out of a hat.
I have never played in a hard bat comp ever before, and I found it much more phyisical than my normal setup lo
Some of the players playing tonight were mulitiple winners in the past years, and one player already plays with Dr evil /peace keeper (so he was right at home)
there were only to normal long pimple players me and the 2008 winner (and 7 times doubles champ) and I was drawn to play him first.....sidenote many players have been using these bats to practice with for several weeks, but I only had a 5min doubles muck around before we were to start
So Im playing the 2008 winner first up and he chases the ball like the old frictionless pimple style of taking backhand all over but will wack a good winner with his forehand, I started off good just trying to be safe and learning as I was playing, I won game 1st 11-8 then he came back when I was up 10-8 to win 13-11 in the 2nd game then I played smarter to win the 3rd 11-6. (after the first round we changed to best of 5 setters)
so overall I was happy as I know he has be practicing for a few weeks now
My next game was a good jnr leftie who in the warm up never missed. I just keept it steady making few errors and I started to learn better serves and I started rolling the backhand for a extra weapon /variety, although he was good in patches I controled him thruout for a easy win 3-0, (I found out after the game that he told his friends I was the best player there) so I think I won before we started lol
My next match was against another experienced player who just beat another fav in his last match, he usually uses a butterfly fast short pimple and a thinner sriver forehand, so I knew I was in for a hard game, but I was playing good at the start, and won the first then he attacked more in the next game to win but I went back to what I know (very little) and just return everything unless I can wack it. for me to win 3-1
I then played another hard opponent in the semis who has been taking the bat home to play many games in the past two weeks and he had a good backhand chop with a loopdrive forehand (he just beat the number 2 seed) this was my best match as I was able to chop his drives back Korean stlye and realy played well to win 3-1 after my normal fall asleep 2nd game)
So now I was in the final against the number 1 player in West Auckland and he just beat the hard bat player 3-0, he was just too good against me, he chases every ball he kept it away from my big forehand, he had alot of good serves but he also could attack each side. this was his first time as well as mine playing hard bat, (he may have wanted revenge lol) as I beat him at the Nationals in October.
so a great fun night with doubles next week (my partners about 80yo ) but we will have fun

Imagine how much more enjoyable the game would have been if you had been allowed to use professional hardbats. The idea to make all equipment equally bad does not level the playing field. In the U.S. we have come up with a list of approved hardbat rubber which is very similar in characteristics. This allows for some individuality in play. The blades are all wood, and players quickly find out that when you use the modern wood blades (designed for inverted rubber) they tend to lose to players who use classic hardbat blades.

Yes I do see that now with the only hard bat player (he's just turned 70) and often beats players with $300. setups lol, I will need to work on a forehand roll and loop drive to get myself better, but it was very enjoyable and with some rallies going over 20-30 times more of a workout too
send me a sample and ill get the other hardbat players to trial your rubber

Many thanks, I had to run a fun day last Sunday for a Table Tennis group, and I took along a clubs funny bats, some big bats and a 78mm ball, but after this last event I could have done a hard bat fun day instead

Enjoy the game. It is a never ending learning experience once you play and keep the ball on that 45 sq ft of space or should I say half of that space.
