I'm a permanent hardbat player since 4 years. I play with 2 different sets :

-against sponge, I use 2 Dr Evil on a Tibhar IV S blade, it's the most deceptive combination that I found to play against sponge players, to "struggle" against spin.
-in hardbat events, I play with 2 Barna Original rubbers and a vintage Dunlop Allround blade : it has the same ply structure than the Barna Original blade, which is for me the best blade to play hardbat that I tried.

I'm a close-to-the-table blocker, with a strong backhand, but a rather bad forehand.

Thanks for chiming in, Francis! I am still playing full time hardbat with my decaying Hock and Dr. Evil, and I still find something new to do with this hardbat almost every time I play. The amount of different nasty junk shots capable with this is amazing.

Now I am starting to groove my forehand by studying the "windmill" technique of many time US champion Dick Miles. Lots of topspin can be generated with this stroke, great for crushing chops and pushes! I absolutely worked over an 1800 chopper with this stroke, so so far, so good.

I still struggle with short balls to my backhand, so tough to attack these with the Dr. Evil. My broken old hardbat is sooooo slow, so I need to invest in a better hardbat blade soon.

id go with YLT in the UK but i expect that the valor chap will be posting soon

probably. he is quite a nice guy though, answered all my emails very quickly. his blades look very nice and well crafted. I have my eye on the "stingray".

a friend of mine got sick of his "ping-pong brand" dollar store hardbat , so he ordered one from Marty Reisman. Supposedly he got all Hocks wood when he died. The old man is taking forever to make it, but I will have to see how it plays. Reisman said he is putting Leyland on it.

i would be surprised if it were original leyland

especially after a company over here called ATP developed a rubber called riesman which is supposedly made from the same moulds as the leyland

i have used them and think that they are very good however all the youngsters in our league are coached and they seem to be able to hit right through me so i went back to double inverted so i could hold my own
to a degree anyway

would you know what sort of cost is involved as to have a blade made by marty himself would be pretty special hock or not

I think Marty Reisman still has a stock of Leyland rubbers that he got after Hock's death, with the woods.
ATP Reisman rubbers can be bought at Paddle Palace and YLT, but unfortunately they're no more ITTF approved, and I think they're not manufactured anymore.

Yep, Reisman got the woods and the Leyland rubber from Hock. I think he mentioned that the supply of rubber was very limited.

My friend ordered his Reisman bat a few weeks ago and still hasn't received it, but when he does, I will be sure to play test it and post a review.

Marty does sell Hock blades with his own touch added. The rubber he has is "Leyland" but is very limited since the company went out of business long ago. I sell very similar blades including a 5-ply Basswood blade which Marty may be out of, or close to. My blades are same shape and wood. I also sell the same blade as the winner of the 2007 US National Hardbat Championship.
