Hi All. I've been fascinated by the World Ping Ping Championships, watching lots of videos on youtube.
https://youtu.be/aFFsXPbcFWU
There's significant prize money and playing with sandpaper bats looks like great fun.
So I sent an email to the organiser, just wondering how you qualify to play in it.
The reaponse I got is below:

thank you for your inquiry.

Australia would need to hold an official qualification event where the winner would be invited to take part in the WCPP finals in London in January 2017.

Basically, we could offer Australia 1 space providing  a qualification event takes place in your country with at least 32 competitors taking part.

I must advise you now that video filming MUST take place and be put up on You Tube after the event is completed,

Matchroom Sport will supply 10 FREE Sandpaper rackets which may only be used at the quqlification event.

Strict rules on the format of the event will be in place.

Requirments:-

Proper Table Tennis Venue to stage the event.

A minimum of 4 table tennis tables to be made available.

Play will take place as follows:-

4 x groups of 8 players on a round robin basis (each player plays all other players in group)

Top 4 go through to play off's. Last 16, 1/4 Finals, Semi Finals and Final.

Winner qualifies for London finals.

Please Note. The winning player would represend Australia at the World Championship Finals.

The winning player will need to pay for their own flight, hotel etc.

NO FINANTIAL ASSISTANCE WILL BE GIVEN TO ANY PLAYER.

Best regards

Fred

So basically what he is saying is that he's prepared to reserve a spot for an Australian Sandpaper Champion! I find this incredible! So if someone organised a tournament, and followed their rules, and posted it on YouTube, we'd get an entry! And we'd have an Australian Sandpaper Champion to respresent us in a world championship event.
Now I don't have the faintest idea how to organise an event like that, but I thought it was worth posting in case somebody out there does and is interested?
I feel it's an amazing opportunity.

This is pretty freakin' awesome! I'd be interested. I wouldn't have a hope in hell of winning, but would love to participate (time & location permitting, etc).

The racket requirement is a bit ambiguous. Do they mean people have to share the supplied rackets, or can they buy extra for themselves, or can they assemble their own?

I think it's a "use suppliers' bats only" type of tournament. Don't want the EJs to get started with different grits of sandpaper, etc. Wonder which ball is to be used.

Correct! They supply the bats and must be used in the event, and only the event. (I assume you'd have to return them after the event).

I suspect you'd want a strong field of players, otherwise the Australian Entrant would be an embarrassment in London

I played in a mini version of this type of event a few years back at Rob's (PingPongRob) place. We had about 10 guys in the field. Playing with sandpaper really is a different experience. The sandpaper really roughs up the ball. You don't want to play with the same ball with a normal rubber, kind of cuts it up and destroys it real quick. Eddie Cotter (HWATT coach) ended up winning the event. Given he was about 500 points above anyone else playing that was not surprising lol.

Does sound like fun though. I wonder how they'd respond to having multiple Aussie entrants from multiple events, or if they'd require winners from different events to play off in Oz first.

I know the organiser, Fred D, nice guy. The bats are commercially available and not expensive, I'll dig out a link. That would work in your practice sessions, however in the tournament communal bats are used even to the extent that bats stay at the same end of the table in a match and the competitors swap when they change ends. The whole principle is no possible advantage via equipment.

The bats were on sale via a uk sports outlet called 'sports direct' but don't seem to be advertised currently. If anyone need one/some pm me and I'll find out how you get them.

Haha, well I just ordered one, so I hope they don't send me a flat basketball! I'm not sure by bats would handle that!

Strange, because when I checked the website there was one there and I ordered it.
Maybe I got the last one?
Or maybe I'll get an email saying it's out of stock soon. They've taken my $ though!
