I don't know if I would consider Dr Evil to be just hardbat. Dr Evil has plenty of tricky anti characteristics which most hardbat rubbers would not have.

So maybe the question should be "Is the anti pip game really that effective against the modern topspin game?"

I think that's just as good if not a better question magritte.

However, I think the discussion had in this thread still largely answers it. It depends on the skill of the player on either side of the table, including the skill to play against all sorts of opposing setups.

Ok by hardbat you guys mean OX? Which is pips and no sponge right? Because inverted rubber needs to be with sponge, or sandwich rubber as it is called.

Second, hardbat can be both SP, LP and medium pips right?

Sorry for being such a noob here.

Actually, "hardbat" is limited to SP only and for a real hardbat tourney, a small selection of SPs are legal. Dr Evil is one of them. :D

i have a YLT hardbat blade which i tried in league play a couple of seasons ago didnt give myself any time to adapt although performed as well as i did with inverted and enjoyed i t a lot
now that i am not playing league i intend to play recreational using this blade with a reisman and a tsp p1r
both are red but this wont matter just for normal play am considering a black evil at some point though incase the desire to play league comes back to me
i would love to be able to get a hardbat team in the league at some point would be cool

I think I would love to play in one such tournament, or a game like this, I guess I would have to change my game a lot to do this, since I am used to playing inverted, both with and against. For some reason I don't think playing against will be as big a problem for me as playing with. I am not saying against won't be a problem, just less than the latter since I have played against anti with minimal adjustment.

Not sure if it is even close to that.

Above a certain level, around 2100-2200 in the US, rubbers that preclude a really effective attack game are a lot less effective and aren't seen very often. Even choppers that play above this level tend to have very powerful forehand loops. A true hardbat player is giving away too much to be very effective in that crowd, probably even against 1900 US players. Against 1500-1800 players in the US, who are quite likely to beat themselves, it can be very effective.

This does not mean that long pips players cannot be devastating attackers, a la Deng Yaping!

Way back in the day, Houshang Bazorgzadeh could attack really well with a hard bat. OX on both sides. He was very tough to play against (I played him a couple of times when I was a junior, which dates me). The standard good players have now, though, is one that would blast right through someone who played that way now.
