Looking at all the videos of the hardbat era, it stands out that some many of these players don't exactly look like athletes, certainly not compared to modern day athletes.

Still I can't help but admire the game and skills displayed, and I can see that these player display high level of skills.

My question is, if some of the modern players get taught to play hardbat, will they be just as dominant as they are in today's game of table tennis, or will they get thrashed by the hardbat greats?

I would have thought tatlwai would be pretty good at it. :)

Might be a little offensive with those loopy LP strokes.

We've all seen the video of Joo getting wiped out by a competent hardbatter (although I'm sure he'd beat that guy after some practice).

Its all just different eras, you and I should not really compare, all I know is that the old hard bat guys had real skill, they would be the same guys that are the top now.

Ha, Ha, thanks, Yuzuki, how would you know?
Actually, I am pretty good in hard bat. I have no problem attacking from the backhand side, it is the forehand side that I still have problem generating speed like the backhand, so far I can only chop from the forehand side and let the killings from the backhand. I do have two set ups using Dr Evil and Peace keeper. The blades are Appelgren Donic Allplay and Yinhe Oneply.

Back to topic, I don't think the modern loopers like or want to play the hard bats, two complete different kind of games. However, given them enough time, with their talents, they can be very competitive, especially those classic defenders.

I filmed this video, actually I'm the guy with the red T-shirt in the first part of the video. ;) It seemed that Joo touched a hard bat for the first time, and he had only 5 mn training before playing me. So when he played Jean-Michel (the guy in blue), he had only 10 mn practice, and Jean-Michel is the No 1 in the french hardbat ranking, so he won easily. We have 2 possible explainations of this defeat :
-Joo is so used to his material, and his skills are so adapted to his play, that it was impossible for him to learn the basic hardbat strokes in a few minutes.
-Joo had a team match 2 days later, so maybe he didn't want to overdo, so that he could hurt himself.
Anyway, it was very kind from him to accept playing 2 sets in hardbat.

Wow! That must have been an amazing experience seeing Joo playing on the other side of the table against you. 8)

Have you ever seen any other top players try hardbat?

Oh yes it was ! :)

The only top player I saw was Marc Closset, a Belgian player, No 77 in France and former No 141 in ITTF ranking. He played just a few rallies against Jean-Michel Carquin (No 1 in french hardbat ranking), just to try, and I think that with a serious training, he could be a good hardbat player.
