I've been playing around with the idea of using an ox hardbat rubber on my forehand while continuing to use long pips ox on the backhand.

So far, I've experimented with Dr. Evil and I just got some Butterfly Orthodox which I haven't tried yet. From what I've read the stroke for hitting with ox short pips is quite different from what we do with sponge (more or a forward and up motion).

I wonder if this could be a more reliable way to smash at the table?

Hi MNNB,

I watched a local player use a slow-sounding bat (very low tone), with LP ox on front, SP ox on back. I did not get the actual labels of the rubbers, I will ask him next time for you.

From my short stint with Dr. Evil, 802, 799, and 563, I did not notice any remarkable difference with hitting/smashing with ox short pips and sponged ones. More like a more open bat, similar to hitting with some LPs.

But regarding the motion you mentioned, I did see that while watching the local player. But I noticed that the forward-and-upward hitting motion generated some topspin, which allowed his faster, earlier balls to land on the table as opposed to a completely flat hit.
