I am planning to switch from penhold inverted to short pips on both sides of blade.

What are the differences in forehand and backhand (traditional bh and RPB) strokes in SP compared to inverted?
How to receive serves using SP? blocking spin serves right off the bounce will work?

Hi, Im a modern defensive player I use Long Pips on backhand OX, but There are no long pimple coaches in my area I tend to do drills I see on videos posted on the internet, What drills could I do to improve my game?

I never attack with the pips side, is this something I should start working with?

No top 100 Defenders use OX Long pips, should I start implementing a sponge into the pips and if so what would I gain from this?

Thank You for your time

".....Hans is famous for finding the perfect playing style for every individual..."

How do you do this - find the perfect playing style? What things do you look for and how do you factor in that a player may need to change his/her playing style as their technique improves and more shots become available to them?

Thanks

Due to serious illnesess and injury, my game continues slow to a pretty much one dimensional passive block/chop block senario. A couple of serious strokes combined with a similar number of heart attacks or episodes seem to have taken out a good bit of my ability to play a touch game and my mobility is limited due to an injury to my left leg. The thing that really bums me out is that I just play by rote and am not able to think things through as I once could do for shot choices. My internal process has the speed of a glacier these days.

I am past seventy so this is pretty much it for me, barring a miracle of biblical proportions. I love to play, so I keep at it, win, lose or draw. I am fortunate in that I am able to play and practice two or three times a week with partners generally kind enough to let me practice what I need/want. I am just not sure what to practice these days.

Is there any way to "re-learn" how to "think" a better strategic or tactical game using primarily those two strokes and thus just make it less easy for opponents to unleash their big guns.

On the occassional forehand hits with inverted I mostly flat hit.

As of late I have been looking to better my serves. My touch has gone to heck-in-a-handbasket so hopefully the extra, extra practice will give me a bit back of what I have lost. I understand the concept of service as outlined by the ITTF's advanced players manual. Execution is another thing entirely.

I know that, in theory that returning with serves with long pips should be a snap but in playing better to really, really good players 2200-2500 US or lower level players with really good serves, I might as well be using inverted, the first day out, so any one with really good serves no matter their overall rating seems to pretty much own me.

As an aside, if I am really limited to passive blocking should I just turn to anti-loop and put the long pips in the drawer?

An answer to any or all of these questions would be greatly appreciated.

I am a tall player with both sides inverted, tend to go a bit far from table to have more time for strokes.
backhand loop is not one of my strong points.
should I switch to short pips in bh?

The national coach here in dublin said when asked by me on the subject of long pips that they were too unpredictable.
Many top class club players use them and they can be used with great effect by a mature player-I would take them over an anti-spin any day.

Hans, what do you look for in a player? How much do you expect from them in work and study of the game? What is the attitude you look for in a prospect? What is in your opinion an acceptable rate of progress? What do you define as progress and how do you measure it? What do you feel is the appropriate ratio of training to match play?

Hans: over 75 player, with SP/LP, close to table aggressive style. Two areas that give difficulty: (1) on the LP side, slow spinny loops drive me nuts. Do you close the blade somewhat, hit through the ball with vertical blade, or come down (say at 10-11 o'clock on the ball)? and (2) on the SP side, notice that most videos of SP show a somewhat loop style (from down to up) yet every stroke analysis keeps saying to strike through the ball (forward thrust) but they keep going out. Your advice? Thanks.

No questions, just thought I'd chime in that Thalin was my coach for 7 - 8 years and was a big influence on my game.

That I can believe :)

I trained with him for 16 hours last week, and I learned a lot. Very small details, but very helpful :)
