Here is an interesting study about the mechanics and speed and spin involved in hitting the ball with a bat:

http://www.ittf.com/ittf_science/SSCent ... Impact.pdf

It's an old (1994) ITTF study and an interesting read.

A few interesting conclusions:

1. The faster rebound (from a blade with rubber) came from a 1-ply hinoki, not a carbon blade

2. For counter-looping, grippy rubbers produce both more spin and more speed compared to sticky rubber.

3. The seam in the ball can produce a 2% error in the angle of the return.

4. The amount of spin produced by a rubber (medium to high speed, not serves/pushes) is more dependent on the elasticity of the topsheet than the grip/tackiness of the topsheet.

There is a reason why J-Pen players prefer a nice 1-ply Hinoki blade, yes.

Also interesting comments on the loss of speed caused by the adhesion of "sticky" rubbers. Are there implications for defending using tacky rubbers rather than grippy? Are there "sticky" long pips? (A question which reveals just how ignorant I am, I'm sure. :D )

BTW, the discussion on the effects of speed glue help me to understand why players might want to speed glue, but also reinforces my feelings that altering the rubber is not within the spirit of the game.

Perhaps so... they probably should have considered that 30+ years ago when it was first used though ;)

Ah... but everyone has 20/20 hindsight. :D

Thier graph had a allround blade and not a fast one

2. For counter-looping, grippy rubbers produce both more spin and more speed compared to sticky rubber.
a German player using a chinese rubber couldn't get the same out of the rubber as a Chinese player using it, reguardless of graphs, also Chinese quality has increased

3. The seam in the ball can produce a 2% error in the angle of the return.
so it can be 98% true or higher

4. The amount of spin produced by a rubber (medium to high speed, not serves/pushes) is more dependent on the elasticity of the topsheet than the grip/tackiness of the topsheet.

To me its more to do with experience, knowledge, ability, antisipation, attitude and footwork

So it said that thicker sponges had less Tpar and Epar (don't have the patience at the moment to figure out what that means, other than the higher they are, the faster it is.) Wouldn't that mean they would be slower????? Hm.....but We all know that's not the truth.
