Shouldn't have been called in an Olympic final. They need another umpire that can overrule these people that go on a power trip

I guess it's no only in soccer where the Umpires want to be the stars of the match.

She wasn't the only competitor called for serving but no one else lost it,
I don't think it is the umpires fault and It's not true when they say she has never been called before,
I think if the top players can follow the rules this will lead to better serving on all levels,
i.e near verticle, don't hide the ball, open hand, and toss it up 6 inches +

Adham completely threw his own ITTF umpire under the bus after this match...

Adham Sharara, president of the International Table Tennis Federation, talked to Ding after the medal ceremony.

"I told her she is still world champion. And I hope she is Olympic champion next time," said Sharara.

Talking about the penalties, Sharara said the rule is that ball has to go vertically upwards and the umpire allows some kind of tolerance. In Ding's case, the umpire felt she was throwing the ball back too far.

"Ding is a fair player. I think it's probably the border line. She called the border line right. The umpire called the border line wrong. It's a very thin line," Sharara said.

Sharara said Ding is experienced as far as technique is concerned, but she needs to learn to adapt to different situations.

"Maybe this is the first time she confronts an umpire who is so strict," said the ITTF chief.

"She has to learn that in the future when this happens, she has to adjust. She has to have another service, something else that she dose not get calls from the umpire. Because this can destroy your concentration and then you lose your gold medal just because of the call form the umpire. She is young. I think she will come back."

didn't the ITTF release diagrams showing what was the tolerance of "near vertical"?

ding's tosses were well within this. many of her other serves in the match were completely the same if not less vertical

totally stupid

p.s. I'll try to find the diagram(s) i'm thinking of

I'd like to see the original for Sharara's quote, as the Xinhua version is probably a translation from English and doesn't make much sense.

@rodderz: no other player "lost it"? I guess you didn't see Maze.

The controversial calls (3 service faults and 2 cards) have now shown up on YouTube:

I think Adham is just doing PR work and getting support from Chinese Fans
Either way, it was kind of him to support Ding Ning.

I think the incident between the umpire and player consist of a few area:

1) Warning of fault serve
2) Fault serve calling
3) Yellow Card - Yellow+Red Card

Now I don't want to debate 1 and 2, but lets debate 3.

What happen there?
From replays and listening to Ding Ning, as well as other news articles, Ding Ning was asking the umpire politely and was rewarded with a red card.

What other sports does umpires have so much power?
Even in soccer, if the player ask nicely, the umpire don't normally make a big scene - unless the player is going over the limit.
Tennis, rugby, cricket, hockey etc are all peaceful.

Now does these ITTF rules make TT the sport with the most strict umpires?
