In short, what positive reasons/arguments can be given for table tennis being an olympic sport ie what's good and strong about table tennis, not what's weak or poor about other sports?

I think thats a good angle to come from. TT is a direct competitor sport where one opponent is directly trying to outplay the other in a fast action environment which requires a physically demanding dynamic body motion from the players which results in some exciting results to view. I think this is the essence of defining a good sport and not all the Olympic sports would have it in as great a volume as TT, even when many TT rallies last only 2 or 3 shots.

I also like ZA-ph's description of art versus sport. TT can be artful too, but in the end it is the players who decide the result, not a judge.

There we go, you explain it much better than me :D

If TT is not worthy to be a sport, then a lot of other sports that "don't smell" also is not worthy in the Olympic

I am still waiting for the editor to come and have a short training session with me.
I'm sure once he is done with me, he will be stinking, and if I fail, I am sure there is another couple of thousand here that is willing to teach the editor how sporty Table Tennis can be

"When a dog bites a man, that is not news, because it happens so often. But if a man bites a dog, that is news."

Considering that the author's bio says he has covered four Olympic Games and has undoubtedly witnessed dozens of different kinds of sports; and considering Ariel Hsing's success and widespread news coverage over the past year, I view this article as nothing more than cheap pot-stirring by a print publication in decline, desperate to encourage readership though manufactured controversy.

Consider yourselves stirred!

Let's keep this in perspective please. TIME asked 9 of its writers to come up with a sport they'd like to drop, table tennis is just one of these 9, alongside:

men's soccer
tennis
dressage
canoeing and sailing (and kayaking too)
race walking
synchronized swimming and rhythmic gymnastics
rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline
shooting

Quite a list... I'm surprised archery is not a target though.

None of this is "influential" or relevant really. As an online comment noted, it's just "filler" between the end of the Olympics and the start of the NFL.
