How much was the entry fee though? That could've been a major barrier.

TT is surely big in India especially in schools and colleges. One major issue is publicity. The sport is huge among players but ignored by media. In commonwealth games, the tickets were sold out first for table tennis before any other sport (my dad had to buy tickets well in advance). That should tell you that there is a sizeable audience willing to pay top buck

I see Indian dailies religiously and there was NO mention of the tournament happening in any of the prominent dailies. This to me is just unacceptable. This is also the reason why turnout was so low.

It is high time Indian media starts talking about sports other than cricket. Especially after players have shown such promise with the highest Olympic haul to date.

Buying equipment is like getting into a relationship. One night stands are great but you get the most out of it when you work at it for a long time.

By the way, if I was in India at the time, I would have flown in definitely to see an event of this size for sure.

At our club we have a high percentage of Indian-born players who played when young then wandered into our club after a decade or two working and getting a family started. Most are very good. One Indian-born player came into our club a few months ago with blue jeans and sandals after a 15-year layoff and beat two of our best players with a borrowed bat. He is now in our First Division and has a USATT rating of close to 2100 in league play. I'm told that at least among the university-educated classes of India that TT is still a very popular sport.

I lived in India for 2 years - when in Chennai, I wanted a hit, and found a club run by a guy called Chandra - former national champion - who had suffered brain damage during a relatively minor operation. Story of this can be read here....

anyway, I was very, very impressed with the club - there must have been over 100 juniors, all training properly, with about 25 tables. Just walking in, I was quite a novelty, so of course had to face a range of very quick juniors one after another!

I struggled to find a club in Mumbai though - table tennis and badminton seemed to be a bit more elitist, and you had to pay a large amount to join a club - so this would be a big limiting factor in India...
