I've played a lot of sports and none have been anywhere near as competitive as table tennis... To the point that I often worry about the kids that play it. For a lot of them its almost life or death serious. You see plenty of tears, verbal abuse and near punch ups at jnr tournaments.

But at their level it may not be seen as competitive and something just for fun perhaps?

Yes you are right I know some kids that play the annual state school championships, there's a category where only non tournament players can participate and that's a nice and friendly competition

While this primarily seems bad for the sport, is backyard baseball bad for baseball? It gets kids into it.

Say a kid gets into this "less competitive" table tennis. Then they play someone good. Mayeb they get into learning about it? versus someone who doesnt play at all....they would (maybe) be all like "What the heck is this????"

Enjoy the game. It is a never ending learning experience once you play and keep the ball on that 45 sq ft of space or should I say half of that space.

Yes, which made me think of the latest World Championships of Ping Pong... I have a feeling if the organizers of this yearly event were able to make their WCPP more popular in the future with huge prize money, in the end more people will be attracted to this sport but they won't be using sandpaper or hardbat. Why? Because they will go to most table tennis clubs and find almost everyone is playing the modern style with inverted, short pips, long pips and anti. So in my opinion, ITTF will surely benefit from this free publicity.
