That is so true! You're right, that's the sign of a great player.. he's got the right mind-set!

The match against Chuang Chih-Yuan wasn't a loss! Shiono defeated the top seed Chuang (WR 6) in the best of 32 at the Japan Open earlier this year. After this match he also eliminated Li Hu, Koki Niwa, Chen Chien An and Xu Chenhao and won the Japan Open. In fact, the only match Shiono lost at the Japan Open was against the Chinese chopper Ma Te in the qualifying rounds. Here's a summary of Shiono - Chuang which he considers as his best match ever:

Another memorable match that he says in the interview.

Highly enjoyable final set. From that angle, it really looks incredible what Shiono brings back. I can imagine he felt really disappointed after losing it, because he was in the lead all the time, until 9-9... He shouldn't have missed that forehand at 9-9 and at 10-10 Hirano was lucky hitting the edge of the net... Anybody knows what equipment Shiono used at that time (januari 2013)?
--> EDIT: just saw a match from december 2012 and it's most probably already Curl P4 on Shibutani Pro

- Why did you choose to be a defensive player?

Shiono: I wanted to play distinctively from other players. And also my father was very attracted to the chopper’s game. Although he played J-pen himself, he was inspired a lot by the chopping game of Mr. Norio Takashima, who played in the same prefecture [former province of Japan] as my father when they were students. Mr.Takashima had a big influence in this prefecture.

- Being the first great Japanese classical defensive player, what role did Norio Takashima play for defensive players?

Shiono: A very big role. I met him only once or twice. Especially his mentality is so great. I respect him a lot.

Just found a few short clips with Norio Takashima, the 'father' of Japanese defensive table tennis:

I think Birding&Tabletennis surely knows a lot more about Norio Takashima, as Birding was a top player himself in that period...

I am doing footwork practice with multi ball, mainly. I am not so tall, so footwork becomes a very important factor. My coach told me exactly how I should move when I joined the Tokyo Arts team. It is clearly far better now than it was before.

Who's the coach? Not Koji?

I'd love to know more about this part "My coach told me exactly how I should move". It'd greatly help my understanding of chopper game. Can we ask him again?

The coach is someone from Tokyo Art team, not Koji Matsushita. I'm going to send a 'thank you' mail to Shiono, so I think we can ask if he has more details about chopping (foot) movements. If there are other questions arising from the interview, please let me know. I think I can add two or three questions to my thank you mail.

On behalf of the OOAK Forum and with the help of Takizawa, I mailed a 'happy new year' message to Shiono. I also thanked him for the great interview and informed him about the 2700+ page views up till now. He said to be very happy with the success of the interview and all the comments and appreciation from so many people from all over the world :-)
