New York Times crossword editor Will Shortz is surprisingly among the best ping pong players in the country, and the owner of the largest table tennis center in the U.S. He also has a master plan to dethrone China as the world leader of table tennis.

Bit of an overstatement...his 'masterplan' is just a joke made in passing, involving poaching talent from China to represent the US.

I noticed one thing about him right away. Anyone else see it?

The fact that he's a Seemiller player? Other than that I didn't see much.

Yes, the Seemiller grip! He seems pretty steady at basic hits but not a lot of body language, a bit like Dr. Neubauer.

His facility looks REAL nice!

I've actually met the guy before, I frequented his club in Westchester, NY for league nights during fall of last year. He was super nice and gave me compliments and tips about my seemiller style of play, saying that I have the "True Seemiller". I still couldn't beat him at the time though.

He also is a sponsor to a transplant from China named Kai Zhang, probably around 16-17 yo by now and rated 2400ish. From what I've seen of him playing in person, I say Kai is probably the best in the entire club at the moment.

Kai Zhang is solid 2600 level player. Got as high as 2708 a few months ago before dropping back to 2668. Don't know if I would consider him America's best hope for ending China's dominance. There's probably hundreds/thousands of kids in China with better/more potential than him otherwise he wouldn't have moved here. Also, depending on when he moved here, he might not even be eligible to represent the US in ITTF events.
